I use a little recorder, the Zoom H2N. Since I subscribed to Tidal I don't record as many records, as Mike said above many LP's are available to stream but not all. I like the sound of records but notice the clicks and other noises more when playing the digital copies so I do clean them up before saving the tracks.

It takes some practice and experimenting with software settings to make a really good "needledrop" to digital.

First thing I would suggest is make sure your stylus is fresh and the records have been cleaned thoroughly.

Next thing I would suggest is organizing things so that you are not recording too many common albums that are available on digital and CD formats. Those generally end up being a waste of time unless your vinyl version is a special version.

Things like common classic rock, albums that have been re-released an nth number of times, etc. are not good candidates for needledropping IMHO.

I reserve it for albums that were never reissued or reissued properly, mono mixes, etc.

Re: USB audio interfaces, there are many options out there. Focusrite and Motu are two of the most popular brands out there. Typically with these you will need cables that are RCA to 1/4'' or RCA to XLR. On the Accession I would use the variable output (that's what it's for) and then test the input level via the monitoring function in software so it does not clip.

Audacity definitely works but is not a beginner friendly program for everyone. Vinyl Studio does not have the slickest looking interface but does have a system that walks the user through each step. You can get a free trial of VS to try before you buy.

I do much the same thing with a Furutech GT40a and Audacity.

I agree completely. Post recording processing can eat up a lot of time, and for common releases it can be far more productive to spend a couple of pounds on a charity shop CD version just to be able to rip it in a few minutes. Your time is worth far more.

You're right, especially on cd's. I've noticed older cd's in charity shops after remastered versions come out.

Case by case, but sometimes those older discs have superior, more dynamic mastering than the newer ones. Many CDs can sound great IME (big fan of the format) but there are definitely many factors at play.

Some early cd's were painfully bright but generally their wide dynamic range means more instruments are audible in busy mixes. I have been pleased with many but not all, echoing your experience David.

I have over 5,000 CDs at this point and many albums on both vinyl and CD. CD sound is all over the place, just like records are.

Finding the best sounding version of an album on either CD or vinyl can take some effort, especially with certain albums.

Other times it's a case of not better, but different. For example I have several copies of Who's Next across several different formats. None of them sound "bad", but each has its pros and cons.
