Good morning, how can I record a vinyl on the PC, and then convert it to digital, keeping my phono preamp? A Graham Slee Accession MC. Thank you.

Hi Vincenzo, your pc probably has an input socket on the motherboard or a soundcard. If it is a line level input you could use an adaptor to connect that input to the Cusat50 cable from your Accession's variable output. Turn the AccMC level down and ot should work. See what you think of the sound quality. If the PC has only a mic input that will probably be too high gain, causing distortion and probably adding noise to the recording.
I use a separate digital recorder and copy the files to my pc afterwards. I use VinylStudio software to edit my vinyl recordings and I know it can handle the recording from from a pc audio input. Other software is available including Audacity which is free.
Others here will gladly share their expertise and help you too.

The PC also has a line input, I have a doubt, the Accession is connected to the PC with the variable output and to the amplifier with the fixed output, in this way do I compromise the signal that goes to the amplifier or not?

That's good news about the pc's line input
Sound wise I'm not sure as my setup is different and I leave my digital recorder attached although it is usually switched off. My suggestion is to compare the sound from the speakers with and without the pc connected. I suspect the pc fan noise would mask any change in the sound.

Hi, the way I have recorded ('ripped') vinyl is to take the variable output from the Accession to an ADC (Analogue Digital Converter). Any ADC could work, I use a Focusrite Scarlett. I feed the digital output from the ADC via USB cable to the pc and use Vinyl Studio software to record. This means the Accession and Focusrite can be used to control volume for the recording, I just settle Accession at mid way and the Focusrite for final level setting. I also use a separate USB output from the pc to my Majestic to monitor the recording and swap between source and recording. I've had good results with my vinyl collection although I have not gone to the extent of perfecting the recordings, removing crackle, clicks etc. Having said all this, moving to streaming has shown me that very few of my albums are not available via Qobuz, so I would be a lot more selective if I was to start again.

I have, as many sought for many years to transfer my prize Vinyl to digital. I read other people experience and the technical information necessary to so undertake but realise it is a " suck and see" exercise that requires more a lot of system consideration thinking. A digital " Gramophone " 24 bit transfer of Valve/Transistor recorded Vinyl is not sonically comparable with the real authentic thing on a platter. But Vinyl will wear out and Digital copy can I am told be enhanced with emerging technology.

I use a little recorder, the Zoom H2N. Since I subscribed to Tidal I don't record as many records, as Mike said above many LP's are available to stream but not all. I like the sound of records but notice the clicks and other noises more when playing the digital copies so I do clean them up before saving the tracks.

It takes some practice and experimenting with software settings to make a really good "needledrop" to digital.
First thing I would suggest is make sure your stylus is fresh and the records have been cleaned thoroughly.
Next thing I would suggest is organizing things so that you are not recording too many common albums that are available on digital and CD formats. Those generally end up being a waste of time unless your vinyl version is a special version.
Things like common classic rock, albums that have been re-released an nth number of times, etc. are not good candidates for needledropping IMHO.
I reserve it for albums that were never reissued or reissued properly, mono mixes, etc.
Re: USB audio interfaces, there are many options out there. Focusrite and Motu are two of the most popular brands out there. Typically with these you will need cables that are RCA to 1/4'' or RCA to XLR. On the Accession I would use the variable output (that's what it's for) and then test the input level via the monitoring function in software so it does not clip.
Audacity definitely works but is not a beginner friendly program for everyone. Vinyl Studio does not have the slickest looking interface but does have a system that walks the user through each step. You can get a free trial of VS to try before you buy.

I do much the same thing with a Furutech GT40a and Audacity.
patientot advises above: Next thing I would suggest is organizing things so that you are not
recording too many common albums that are available on digital and CD
formats I agree completely. Post recording processing can eat up a lot of time, and for common releases it can be far more productive to spend a couple of pounds on a charity shop CD version just to be able to rip it in a few minutes. Your time is worth far more.

Case by case, but sometimes those older discs have superior, more dynamic mastering than the newer ones. Many CDs can sound great IME (big fan of the format) but there are definitely many factors at play.

Some early cd's were painfully bright but generally their wide dynamic range means more instruments are audible in busy mixes. I have been pleased with many but not all, echoing your experience David.

I have over 5,000 CDs at this point and many albums on both vinyl and CD. CD sound is all over the place, just like records are.
Finding the best sounding version of an album on either CD or vinyl can take some effort, especially with certain albums.
Other times it's a case of not better, but different. For example I have several copies of Who's Next across several different formats. None of them sound "bad", but each has its pros and cons.

Very interesting topic. Mid to late 60's and 70's vinyl records re-issue on CD format under in late 80's were never convincing but for the convenience of CD player. Re-Mastered with 20/24 bit save CD format and then you have many who jumped this bandwagon but only three or Four leading Music producers ever perfected the art with the limitation of Redbook rules of CD. But never achieved the emotional content of new Vinyl release of the 21st Century albeit on digital lathe.

Jon, best advice I can give has all be said above, to start with clean vinyl source and go for a system such as Accession => ADC (Focusrite or other) => VinylStudio on pc. I record (rip) to FLAC files and store onto a NAS. It works well and gives good results. Post processing the recording with the likes of Clickrepair can improve things but I haven't gone down that route, preferring to keep record of what I have. There are more 'clean up' software available, some costing £ks maybe new software using AI technology if the aim is to make perfect recordings. I have ripped probably 600ish vinyl and CDs, which I play alongside streaming on an Innuos Zen mini device. I would certainly be more selective if I were to start again but I enjoyed the experience and now have a choice of source which I can retain. I guess I could get rid of originals but, for me, there are too many memories attached to much of the physical media. I wish you luck!

If the record is noisy and appears to be in poor condition after cleaning find another copy of said record before digitization if possible. Garbage in = garbage out.
Be aware that not all records are cut at the same level. Monitoring and testing input levels for each record is unfortunately kind of a required thing if you want a good result.
Listen to results before doing a bunch of records in a row. You may find that you messed something up and need to correct it before doing the next record or doing the first one over again.
Be aware that some versions of Windows will default all USB input recording to mono even if the settings in Audacity or another program say something different. You will have to go into Windows settings to fix this. The Audacity FAQ has some information about this, as does Vinyl Studio, IIRC.

Good morning, in recent days I have done some experiments regarding recording vinyl on the PC. In short, in the end I didn't spend anything, I certainly don't expect the quality to be excellent but it's certainly better than recording with a cell phone. Basically I connected the variable output of the Accession to the LINE IN input of the PC and after downloading MOVAVI in the free format I started recording using a USB video camera. But what can I tell you, for what I spent to have this experience it doesn't suck for me. Try listening with headphones.

That's a very good start, definitely better than a cell phone. Audacity may help as an audio recorder straight onto the PC's hard drive.

There's no nice way to put this, so I'll just come out with it. I have played the beginning of the top video over my crappy laptop speakers, and your TT is running a tad fast. I noticed it immediately. The piece (Riviera Paradise) is around 56 bpm, and the reverberated attack and decay of the rim shots on the snare is what gives the biggest clue. Overall the drums are driving things along, and they shouldn't be.
I haven't played any of the others, because they'll have the same issue.
Do you have a means of correcting the TT rotational speed?

Hi Vincenzo, A strobe disk is the easiest way. Vinyl engine has ones you can download and print. You'll need the one for you local mains frequency and a mains light that flickers e.g. old fluorescent tube or neon power light.
Well spotted Chris. What you estimate the turntable speed to be please?

Vincenzo is in Italy, so the mains is going to be 230vac at 50Hz.
The tempo of the piece is dictated by the guitar track, which was largely recorded in one take, the guitar being played solo. The accompaniment was recorded after the event by the other musicians, focussing on getting the feel right. There was never a click track to work to, so bpm values are approximate.
After the guitar preamble settles down to something with a fairly regulated rhythm, it is being played at approximately 56 bpm. This is what I've heard over the many years since the "In Step" album was released, having the album on both LP and CD.
On Vincenzo's recording the preamble settles down to 59 bpm, which is sufficient to alter the attack and decay of the reverberant sounds. It is also significant in that the drums begin to sound like they're driving the piece along, which has never been the case. The drums were always following the guitar, and feel with the playing very much in evidence.

Looking at the Youtube video I notice that the motor pod is standing proud of the plinth. Is there much room to move it in towards the plinth, Vincenzo? It might put a touch of slack into the drive loop, and drop the speed by a tiny amount.

The only way to accurately regulate speed on those things is to get an electronic speed control box. Unfortunately since VPI uses a different type of motor than most of the common belt drive turntables, it will be much more expensive. VPI makes one but charges a hefty fee for it - it used to be around $1K if not more.
Years back there was a company called Phoenix Engineering that made a variety of belt-drive speed controllers. They had one specifically for VPI TTs but it went out of production quickly. I'm not sure how easy or cheap they are to get on the used market. Word is the Phoenix guy is basically working with SOTA Turntables now, but I'm not sure offhand if they have a speed controller for a VPI. It would probably be worth asking them.
But yes if you don't have a speed controller then you are basically stuck with belt-fiddling and moving around the position of the motor pod until a strobe disk or other device shows the correct speed. It might be possible to adjust the motor itself but that is tricky and you'd probably have to remove the motor from the pod in order to do it.

Good morning, first of all thank you for taking the time to answer me. I did some tests with an app downloaded on the phone and placed on the plate, actually the pulleys behave in this way, both in the 45 rpm and in the 33 rpm ones, the more you go upwards the more the revolutions decrease. Honestly, I would never have gotten there without your advice because it seems obvious that the pulleys should be cylindrical and not conical in shape but evidently this is the case. In the end I found the exact speed in the highest grooves of the two pulleys. Thank you.
