The previous owner had refitted the drawstring incorrectly and left out a washer so the arm and cartridge stopped partway through playing a record.

It looks or looked very good. Mine is lower down in my rack as it doesn't need the lining up of the stylus and groove. Just put the record on the platter, close lid and press PLAY. Thanks again Bob for your advice on cartridges.

It would be good to see some modern ones, but there are plenty of secondhand 1980s models on the market. The problem is there are too few people who know how to service or repair them.

There are a few linear arms on the market. They are generally very expensive and use an air bearing with a pump system. They can also be a pain to set up. 
SL-1200 MK7 (modified) + Reflex M + PSU-1 used with AT150-40ML, AT VM610 MONO, AT VM95ML, Stanton 680mkII + Ogura, and Shure M35X cartridges.
