I have already been in touch with Morris Minor who knows about these linear trackers. I learned what my budget belt drives couldn't do when I got an SL1210 mk II, thanks to Graham's encouragement some years back. After a lot of work on mine and servicing other peoples I saw the precision engineering inside not just the workhorses we played in the 1990's. Today I got my first SL-7 and put a budget Audio Technica elliptical P-mount in it. It's bright even on minimum capacitance in the AccMM, thank you for the US -16dB setting. I shall give the AT some time but may buy a better cartridge in due course.
I was happy to pay for a VG example with smooth arm tracking rather than one needing a rebuild. Even with a service manual and lots of tools it is nice to enjoy something that works straightaway!
As usual i am looking at moving at getting the 240V supply out of the chassis, Graham's wise advice paid off on the 1210. The SL-7 has a 12V dc input so it's a lot easier this time. Better drop leads would probably help. And I've also thought about the local voltage regulation and supply decoupling caps.a
Right now I'm enjoying some music. And not missing all the time spent on lateral alignment! It is literally plug and play with P-mounts.

Do they still make the SL-7 ? I thought it had gone out of production some years ago. I have just been reading up on it and they say the parts are hard to come by and vary expensive.

I use to love my old Technics HiFi a CD player, Amp and Kef speakers. It was a well built bit of kit and a big up grade on the system I had before sound wise (and build) It looked a premium product too. Back then I had given up on Vinyl and tape, I did keep hold of some of my records but none of the tapes, I had no need to keep my tapes as I had bought a CD player for the car. I did like vinyl but I was more into compact cassette as you could play them any where. How things have changed for me I'm now back into vinyl in a big way, I still like CDs and still buy them. CDs are a cheap way of buying new music second hand.

Yes similar experience for me but I went over to ripping those cheap CD's to a music server, as well as many of my records.
I bought my SL-7 because of the linear tracking. Partly it is the big fix for the pivoted arm's arc geometry and alignments, partly I love the retro application of the latest cd player laser head servos to record players just as CD's were seen as the future. The linear tracking made me think of the wax cylinder recording and playback, so another century old piece of phonographics. The SL-7 is very clever tech and quite cute too!

I have ripped nearly all my CDs to 2 portable hard drives one of which is SSD, I say nearly all as I have just purchased a couple CDs and have not got round to ripping them. I was thinking of going into computer audio but I have now given up on it. Just using the hard drives as back up. One day I will get round to getting myself a Technics turntable, there is just something about them that appeals to me, that and a lot say good things about them sound wise and build. Build quality (sound quality) is important to me as I do tend to keep my HiFi a long time before an up grade, have not got the money to throw around. I like to spend TOO MUCH money on new music

All my vinyl ripping is done with my SL-7. I don’t have to be there to lift the arm at end of a side.
Update:
My son has asked me to rip the last four or five LPs he’s purchased so I decided to get started with this a few minutes ago, but the SL-7, which hasn’t been used for a few weeks has developed a serious fault. I pressed start and the LP started spinning way too fast, my guess would be in the order of 100 RPM and fortunately, probably, the arm did not drop. So I now have a useless piece of 1980s HiFi.

I was considering phono sockets in place of the OEM leads. Now I am thinking Tone Arm Connector as I could use the leads from my SME arm. Also it will include the chassis ground wire.
Should have guessed the 12v car battery connector has negative pin/positive outer. It would be too easy otherwise!

that's bad news. I have been lucky as far as HiFi goes the only bit of kit that I have had problems with was a Philips CD player (my first CD player) but I was going to up grade it at the time anyway so it was not too bad for me.

If you do find anything out I would be interested. There’s not many people that work on these old linear trackers anymore. My SL-7 was more than serviced by someone that Bob recommended to me, but he’s not operating anymore. I’ve had an SL-QL1 and a couple of SL-D1s looked at by someone in Bristol. Earlier today I measured my two P-mount cartridges. Both had similar coil resistance and inductance on their left and right channels. 30dB channel separation on both sides of the AT95, whereas the Technics 202 was 25/30. It makes me wonder whether a better stylus would lift the Audio Technica from solid to sophisticated?

One of the pleasures of having the SL-7 is being able to play some singles without any tracing distortion. I will be trying some tomorrow which will probably highlight the fact my RCM doesn't clean 7 inch records, motivating me to solve that puzzle next.

The SL-7 has done a fine job today playing some of my seven inch singles. I ran an M6 bolt through a wood offcut and added layers of heatshrink to the bolt so a 7 inch single can be manually rotated through my RCM's ultrasonic bath and subsequent blow dry. It worked well as demonstrated by the 'before and after' playing of Golden Brown by the Stranglers.
I have also had a good look at the noise floor between tracks of a couple of clean LP's. Even with Vinylstudio's rumble filter switched off I couldn't see any issues with 50 Hz or multiples of it so I think I'll stick with the internal mains transformer for now. I have the external supply I made for my SL1210 and parts for a female to male adapter that reverses the dc polarity so the dc feed option is still open on my SL-7.

Ifor, Need to look for a cracked and/or loose solder joint on the motor driver circuit. You could also have a failing electrolytic cap on the power supply or the motor driver circuit. If there is a speed feedback pickup coil (extra winding on the drive motor), that circuit could be a location of a loose connection, too.
Remember, any electronics over 20 years old can have leaking and/or failing electrolytic caps. When electrolytic caps age their leads can come apart inside or they can leak a stain on the pcb. If any electrolytic caps are found bad, it is best to replace all of them.
In the 1980's, lead-free solder was just starting to be used and many repairs only needed to be re-soldered. Bad & cracked solder joints were very common then... but so were caps' leads coming apart, and resistor leads that disconnect with changing temps.
You need to investigate the link Jon sent. Others may have common problems they have found... BUT do not rule out bad solder joints or caps.

I hope you get it sorted out Ifor. I thought it would be a sensor fault or more likely a poor connection from the circuit hoard to the sensor. Hence the unplug and replug the connector then resolder the connections as that post and Bruce said. The IC's are quite reliable and only fail if abused, sloppy soldering is a possibility but your engineer probably had a good look as I would. Aging capacitors are a possible culprit as Bruce wrote.

On my SL-7 I have done more listening (Burning Spear - Garvey's Ghost) and some testing. I found the downforce was high at 1.43g so took it down to 1.3g, still tracked well. I used the Hifi News test LP's pink noise track 2 to check the frequency response (3dB/octave boost) which was pretty flat IMO except the gradual rolloff below 100Hz hence the tight or lean sound. I'm not sure if the otherwise VG cart is the cause but I will be exploring some options other than increasing the bass control that I don't have during playback! Adding a little mass to the headshell helps on pivoted arms but perhaps not here with the T4P spec.
Bob knows linear trackers so I respect his views and others here too. I think the turntable and arm are better than the cartridge I have but I am still enjoying the listening experience. the SL-7 is also a nice design with great technology inside.

Today i used a motor with reduction gearing and 8mm spindle to make a powered single turner for my RCM. I used an 8mm F to 6mm M adaptor, Thread Lock on the 8mm end and a little bit of heatshrink on the 6mm end. An old PSU supplies 3 volts dc and it works quite well. The new bits were about a tenner on Amazon.
I also bought some antistatic sleeve liners... please the see 'inner sleeves' thread elsewhere on this forum for more information.

I'll be doing some more testing on my SL-7 this weekend. I am curious to measure the lead capacitance so will need to disable the muting relays (or energise the coil) as well as unplugging the cartridge. I checked the frequency response with pink noise as noted earlier and got a reasonably flat response. I also had a quick look at the reproduction of sine waves at different frequencies, which got more pointy as they approached 10k which is not unusual and it's (mis)tracking I'm interested in rather than added harmonics outside my hearing range. I may take another look.

After looking at the frequency response and those 'pointy' sine waves I decided to order a better T4P cartridge with a good cantilever and Shibata stylus. I'll keep the AT85EP as a spare, it is really good for the price.
I think I am going to fit my SL-7 with a socket block in place of the captive phono leads. It will allow me to use Cusat50's which I have recommended to others for connecting the turntable to the preamp.
Comparing my SL-7 with my bg turntable Michell Gorbe (GyroDec with Orbe platter and clamp) with SME IV arm has meant kneeling in front of the hifi rack swapping cables, which has lost its novelty. So I have finally built the line level switching box I wrote about months ago so my AccMC and AccMM (connected to my SL-7) are linked to it with some 0.6m Cusat50's that John Cadman made for me. The original 0.6m Cusat50 pair run from the switch box to my Majestic.

I remember the 'servo loop mod' I did on my SL1210 Mk II. Since the SL-7 uses the same DD chips for speed and phase control, in particular the AN6680, I wondered if the same benefit would apply to changing the components in the SL-7. Yes I mean the 220nF and 220k in parallel and connected to pins 14 and 15, the feedback loop. If you have looked at the schematics as I have you'll notice they are similar but not identical. Also I think the motor and speed sensors are different in the SL-7.
Some years after testing the servo loop mod by ear I installed a good 'wow and flutter' app on my Android phone which showed switching in the extra parts (470nF and 33k) dramatically improved speed stability on my SL1210 Mk II. So I feel obliged to see if it helps the SL-7 in the same way. Something for tomorrow morning...

2 sigma comes out at 0.1% which is very low and that variation is about 1.9 seconds or platter warp on 33.3 rpm. So I'll leave well alone.

On my SL-7 I used a test record with 3150 Hertz track to check the speed, which my frequency counter confirmed was good. Up and down a few Hertz over the 2 approx. second rotations but kept close to 3150. I connected it to one channel of my AccMM's variable output.
The app's wow and flutter is really handy as you get a graph and a stat. The alternative is estimating from the counter reading variations as above. A strobe and test disk are also good for speed checking, spot on for my SL-7 thanks to Technics!

The SL-7 runs quite warm so I will be trying an external 12 volt supply tomorrow to see if that helps and to check the sound is okay.

When I had my original SL-7 bought new back in the day I succumbed to temptation and got the p-mount version of Shure's V15 (long discontinued of course). But the OEM Technics P-22 was no slouch either. Happy days of simple setup and press-button record playing .

To suit my tastes the Accession M was very helpful. I went for 0pF added capacitance and the US eq option that cuts the treble slightly.

I just made a polarity inverting power lead for the 12 volt input of my SL-7. Clearly that allows me to use s standard + tip PSU with the SL-7 so I set my SL1210 supply on 12V.
As expected the music sounds the same. i will leave the SL-7 on and see whether it gets warm. Later I will see if there is any difference in the noise floor.

Having used a 12v supply for a few weeks I like the SL-7 running much cooler with no static. I removed the mains cable and have a figure 8 socket I may fit at some point.
My next small project is to clean, re-lubricate, and recalibrate the linear tracking tonearm.

That was always a goal. Last weekend I cleaned the steel bar that the tonearm moves along and I'm glad I did as some dirt came off it! I am not not hearing a difference but am glad to have tackled it.
After a lot of reading up I decided I to take a look at the arm sensor and its motor servo settings. It turned out on my SL-7 that the high reading is under 2 volts, nothing like the 15v suggested by the service manual. More importantly the arm sensor was not in the right place so the arm in central position was giving the maximum voltage 1.22 volts. I fixed that with a 1.5mm Allen key and then started on the servo amp settings. That involved a leap of faith without the 1mm test record which I and others expect to be the arm movement per second so essentially the pitch rather than the thickness of the disk. I used an unmodulated test track and my estimated target voltage for a more normal record of under 0.1mm per second. Then tested the tracking at +12dB which was clean and a few records which sounded pretty good too. So did the second goal!

In another thread I shared an obvious tip of using the Accession switch from standard RIAA to USA as a 2dB treble cut. Maybe I have adapted to the crisp sound of the AT cartridge or it has matured but I am enjoying the standard setting more now. I haven't used the big deck (Michel Gorbe/SME IV/Hana SL for some weeks which is quite telling. I will be doing some comparisons this weekend to check it's not just ease of use!

Technics linear trackers have caught my interest. I bought a just working SL-DL5 last month and started an overhaul. Built a replacement for the bent cue bar and relubed the arm rail after cleaning it. That made me certain my SL-7 had been serviced as its arm belt wasn't egg shaped and the lubricant was reasonably clean. The DL5 has my AT85 cartridge and works fine now. I like the sleek full width casing but the SL-7 sounds better and the compact design has won me over!

And my p-mount website is now defunct. I decided the hosting costs weren't worth the small number of visitors it got. Talk about a niche subject! My website was actually p-mount.net, not T4P.net.
At the risk of going uber-nerd, for those who don't know - the terms T4P and p-mount are not interchangeable.
p-mount refers to the plug-in mounting connection only. T4P was the Technics specification for the physical properties of their p-mount-using cartridges - weight, dimensions. Not all p-mount using cartridges from other manufacturers adhered rigidly to the T4P spec, especially in weight. TBH I never weighed the myriad of p-mounts I had through my hands, though I did experiment a bit with the limited VTF options the Technics stub arms offered.

"My website was actually p-mount.net, not T4P.net. " My apologies Bob.
I think you also told me or I read that the T4P spec also ensured the stylus was in the right place, i.e. going in from the record edge to centre perpendicular to the groove with nearly zero tracking error. I have read some p-mounts have the stylus too far from the rear of the cartridge so in a 4TP linear tracker the stylus is beyond the line it should be on, then it is not square to the groove giving some tracking distortion all the way through.

I am about to reset the arm servo on an SL-DL1 which has the same arm and servo circuit as the SL-7 so decided to revisit my previous work on this. First of all I think the Technics 1mm pitch test record was/is a widely spaced groove, 7 or 8 times the average groove spacing or pitch on an LP. I wanted something nearer to the Technics 1mm and for it to be a fixed pitch for ease of measurement with a digital multimeter.
On an LP you have 20 minutes in 80 - 90mm width, go fo the maximum 90mm which happens in 20 x 33 1/3 = 667 revolutions, giving pitch of 0.135mm per revolution. Variable pitch lathes have been in use since the 1950's so the goove is further apart in the loud bits of music and closer in the quiet bits e.g. gaps between tracks. It is that dead space or silent groove that appeals because the groove is not modulated so not moving side to side (in and out), which would make it hard to measure the SL-7 arm servo voltage.
The Hifi News test LP no.2 has 20 seconds of silent groove that is well spaced. The track is 3mm across so the pitch is 0.3mm (= 3 / (20/60 x 33 1/3). Based on Technics' 0.6V for 1mm pitch I aimed for 180mV with my test track. The result sounded even better than before.

The SL-DL1 was instructional as it showed how one mistake (not by me or Ifor!) had messed everything up and why you should always check the service manual.
The SL-DL1 was sticking, playing one revolution of the groove again and again. From reading up on the subject I expected to find the tonearm carriage wasn't sliding smoothly along the guide rail or the motor servo settings were wrong. The rail was a bit rough so I cleaned it with IPA then used fine wet and dry paper, same for the cylindrical bearing in the carriage that runs along the rail. I refitted it and adjusted the offset sensor position and the servo presets. Record still sticking so I took the guide rail, tonearm, and disc sensor PCB out. I noticed the string was slack but it wasn't the tensioning springs, in fact the string wasn't running on one of the pulleys but on its axle. I took the arm drive wheel off to get at the pulley and check the string, finding the circlip didn't have a washer underneath... When reassembled I could still hear a very quiet rubbing noise so I tried the only thing left and found the string was laid back to front on the drive wheel. It all works again now but this shows how careless work at some point in the 40 years had sabotaged the well engineered product that left the factory.
I fitted my LP Gear VS cartridge and am enjoying some LP's.

I also cleaned out the cueing mechanism and replaced the silicone oil that slows the arm drop and lift speed. I picked some 100,000 cSt fluid from a local RC model shop. At some point I will get a higher viscosity like 300,000 cSt but it is definitely better for now.

The 300,000 cSt (yes that would be 3 kSt but it is a flow speed measurement that reminded me of the Stint Meter used on golf greens) finally arrived a few days ago. The vendor was apologetic as the courier had sent it somewhere else and agreed to post it to me the second time...
Anyway it has done the job as the drop speed is now normal. I think this is the right viscosity of silicone oil if you need to refill a cueing cylinder but you'll need a few millilitres so the 60ml bottle will probably outlast me.
Whilst I had the tonearm assembly off the rail I drilled out the outer hole for the T4P locking screw. This means you can push the cartridge in and slide the screw across into the threaded hole on the far side. It was one of the few 'value improvements' in the SL-DL5 that I liked along with the screw having a plastic thumbwheel instead of a recessed hex or posidrive that means trying to get a screwdriver turning in the tight space between the lid and mechanism dust cover. Even then T4P is a lot easier than fine tuning a normal cartridge to achieve one of the alignments.
Also I picked up a second? hand Oyaide BR12 to try on my SL-DL1. It is 2mm thicker so the SRA would be about 1 degree shallower at the start of an LP then reducing as the BR12 is concave or dished. You need a clamp for this but there is limited space due to the low profile lid height and the edge of the dustcover overlaps the record label so a smaller than normal weight or clamp is needed. I dismantled the (spare) Michell clamp that came with my GyroDec and fitted a disk of 5mm acrylic. I used a hole saw to give me a 90mm diameter disk, countersunk it for the clamp to engage on the short spindle and superglued an M8 washer on top to centre the mechanism. It does the job on the BR12 mat and the stock mat, but I have yet to listen to records on it. If I like it I will probably but small holes in BR12 so the disk-size LED's can shrine through to the sensors in the lid. I will find a neat way to cut the holes or slots, assuming first that I like the sound compared the original mat.

I use this BR12 mat on my 1200MK7 with a Michell "R" clamp. Works great to firmly clamp the record to the platter and also flatten out certain types of dish warps. The thick mat also has a damping effect I like.

Thanks David. Similarly I have the aluminium version (MJ12) for my SL1210 mk2 and it does a great job on there, I was shocked when I saw how the price has gone up in 8 years. Initially I popped that on my SL-DL1 just to check the extra height wasn't a problem, but I like the MJ12 on my SL1210 and wasn't drilling 6 holes in that for the disk size LED's under the SL_DL1's platter.
The BR12 is really nice and I agree with your points about the design. Whilst I haven't played any LP's yet, the BR12 absorbs any platter ringing so would expect similar control over any record resonances, especially as I'll be using a clamp. Also a Michell clamo but with a home made acrylic that ensures clearance from the underhang of the SL-DL1 lid and dustcover.

That modification makes locking the T4P carts much easier. I must admit in some cart comparisons I was just sliding them in without the screw.
I just popped an LP in the SL-7 and pressing the play button is so easy compared to cueing. Plus you get a bit longer to sit down before the music starts!

This morning I searched for the T4P cartridge spec which filled gaps in my knowledge like it is 20mm from the back of the cartridge to the stylus. Morris Minor (Bob) had warned me that many P4's were not T4P, I see now it can mean compliance, SRA, and overhang may be wrong so not square in the groove. I know from pivot arm modelling the tracing arc and angular error of cartridges in Excel that a shorter screws to stylus dimension makes a difference, especially on the inner grooves. My SME arm has fixed screw holes not slots so a slightly different alignment results.

Some May remember my SL-7 with its runaway speed issue, discussed earlier in this thread. Six months ago I delivered it to a guy in Bolton hoping that he could repair it. Today he emailed, “Hello Ifor , …It’s defeated successful repair so far !! , despite several attempts. I’ve seen a few of these before but this one is a weird one. Let me know if you want to leave with me , or if you want to collect I’ll reassemble it”.

Sorry Ifor. That is really bad news. I am curious what causes this loss of speed control to happen in one of these Technics but more sorry your SL-7 isn't running.

Would an SL-DL1 help?

No, at the very least an SL-QL1, but I don’t have the room for a wide one; I really want my SL-7 fixed.

I learned recently that the SL-7 is a classic, lots of clever tech in a small package. I hope yours gets well soon Ifor.

I’ll report here, but it’s not easy to find anyone to work on it.

Have you tried "uk.electronic.partners". It's a trading name for Aftermarket Service Corp. They are in Faringdon Oxfordshire.
