I also went through the same, never quite feeling that i could get my turntable driven system right. So i went through a complete change, sold amps, turntables,oh ok i got rid of everything. Deep breath and started again from ground up with a cd based system. Yep i could definatly here all the gasps of horror from everyone, but here is the thing, iam now really enjoying my love of music again with a strange mix of gear all my music pals are taken with what is a very analogue sound , took me a while but i went forward with a sonic signiture from my years of vinyl and valves.

Can't do that! It's too precious; not enough of it left.

Me too. I've probably scanned 1000 of mine, but have another couple of thousand to go and then there are several thousand of my fathers. It's all very tedious, but needs doing.
As for vinyl, I'm buying more now than I did in my younger days and enjoying doing so.

I've certainly bought more vinyl this year than cds. Still on a digital note but straying way from music I've got about 2000 35mm transparancies some of which have been scanned into jpeg files but I sent them away to be done professionally.  Many have since found their way into a publication which is why quality was important but it's also expensive.  I'm just about to start on some of the others plus 35mm black and white negatives and would welcome your experience on the effectiveness of scanners, there seems to be many available online but...

At first, I thought you were referring to the vinyl... LOL

I'm on my third flatbed scanner with slide/negative thingies. My current scanner is an Epson 1650P (the P stands for photo, which differentiates it from the one without the P which doesn't have the thingies).

I scan into Photoshop Elements at high resolution and make any changes (e.g. Clone stamp to get rid of dust and fibres) before saving as a JPEG. I save in much higher resolution than is strictly necessary, my thinking being that if anyone at a later date wants to crop an image it will still be good.

This link < http://iforphillips.smugmug.com/Military/IGLlP-Wartime-Photos > is to some of my fathers WW2 photos from India and Burma that I scanned last year. The B&W negatives are not all good. There's so much more to do. It's rather daunting.

It's surprising how you can get bogged down with hardware issues when you kinda forget the reason the hardware is there.....to play music. I do still have a Rotel CD player which I'll probably press back into service because it is an 'oldie but goodie'. Digital, for me, has come of age in recent years and that glare and sterile sound that was (fairly) aimed at it has been all but eliminated with the advent of the external DAC. Using the Bitzie on the loaner programme last year and my present DAC confirmed this for me and I am very much looking forward to listening to the Majestic just because I find it interesting to hear how far digital has come in the last 30 years or so.

The Rotel RCD-965BX was a landmark player and showed the potential of digital replay at an 'affordable' price point, even better with the Discrete upgrade. Until that time I'd wondered what the fuss was all about. I've still got mine which is pressed back into service on the odd occasion when the main player is out of action.
