It's quite rewarding doing some DIY on speakers.

Agreed. I see 2nd purchases as projects. I will be making some wooden stands soon to lift the smga's and give them a more rigid base.

I too will be getting back to speaker DIY very soon. Would like to experiment with desk-attached VESA-mount arms for monitors as a means to lift speaker enclosures completely off my desk and to position them in front of the head; eliminates the room reflections and allows deep bass extension as high dB SPLs would not be required. Ideally I will get to a point with speaker drivers where I am satisfied that I can achieve an almost totally flat response and sell my MySphere 3.1 headphone. Just not interested in headphones anymore; it's really nice to not have to wear anything on the head.

Well that sounds interesting Ash.. I cut and sewed up my new speaker socks today. They look much better than the original covers and let more of the sound through. The beige is less orange than I saw on screen and blends well with the other finishes in my living room. Needless to say it has been a good excuse to listen to lots of music.

The dipoles I tried before were normal drivers on open baffles and suffered from a rapid bass rolloff due to cancellation between front and back output. That gave a limited sound that was light on bass. The Magnepans produce plenty of bass which is good for me and it is probably reflected backwave reinforcing the direct sound.

Sounds like a great DIY project you've got going Jon. Thumbs Up

Hope you can eventually share some pictures.

Thank you Graham. I took some photos this morning while I was replacing the internal cabling with Spatia hookup wire. I will upload them when I have a chance.

My next step is to make some wooden stands. I'll start with some 2 by 1 offcuts.
