I have just acquired a mid-eighties* psir of Magnepan SMGa panel speakers and I am enjoying listening to them. Not my first dipoles and careful positioning helps. Powered by the sublime and powerful Proprius amps, the 4 ohm load is not a problem so I have a nice and natural room filling sound. No tweaks yet but I have a few parts ready. Has anyone here has anything like them?
*They had a full service sticking down any delaminated wires as part of the price. Edited by Fatmangolf - 29 Jun 2023 at 7:41pm |

They are only 3/4 inch or 18mm thick but produce a full range sound from front and rear as they are dipoles. The panels are 4 feet (1,200 mm) high and about 19 inches (480mm) wide. I'm taken by the height of the sound and its room filling sound. It is quite detailed for the age and price I paid.

Hope they continue to impress, Jon.
I did consider some Magnepans a while back but realistically just do not have the room for them. They are essentially multi-way as they typically contain more than one size of panel so not designed for close nearfield listening. I do like the dipole principle and if I had a large room, they would probably be my speaker type of choice. Although they're designed for very modest excursion but high sound purity so would take some careful consideration for best performance.

Thanks Ash. By coincidence I looked into some secondhand Magnepans before the pandemic but they were 6 feet high black panels and over a grand. Too big to risk that kind of money...
Now I have the much cheaper and smaller SMGa panels. Ash is right about the HF/LF split mylar panel. I have the narrow HF strip on the outside of each speaker and it crosses over quite low at about 800 Hertz but first order. Magnepan advises that the distance from the listening position should be the same for the HF panel as the LF panel. Similar to getting the height and vertical angle right on multiway box speakers. After that the toe-in focusses the sweet spot of box speakers. On my panel speakers the toe-in sets the horizontal offset between HF and LF in each panel and the sweet spot... experimentation is key.

Fitting new capacitors has improved the treble, not shrill but cymbals and strings are clearer.

I measured the mylar film's width and the two parts that reproduce high and mid/bass frequencies. Their mid point was 185mm (about 40%) in from the outer oak strip. So i used a laser tape measure with a flat base to project a perpendicular beam and align this at my listening position. Good sound and repeatable geometry.

This morning I removed the cloth covers or 'socks' as I plan to replace them with a modern grill fabric. It meant pulling out a lot of staples. I am about to wash the original covers as they are quite dirty.
This has also allowed me to hear the speakers naked and they sound better. It is not a look I want in my living room so I will be sewing up new socks this week.
