It is true that the amplifier's load can destroy the amplifier should that load be a short circuit, or too low an impedance, or its capacitance or inductance compromises the amplifier's stability. Therefore, an amplifier ought to be designed with these things taken into consideration. The output inductor protects against some degree of capacitive short/overload. The Zobel network compensates for the loss of loading. And the phase and gain margins must not reduce to, or go beyond zero (or even approach it) when the amplifier is subjected to known difficulties. Thermal conditions are easily detected simply by touch, and if a particular load results in the heatsink/casework getting hotter than you feeling comfortable with, then maybe something is amiss. Much of the worry comes about by manufacturers who omit safeguards on the premise that their circuit is "perfect" (which circuits seldom are) or "it sounds better" without them. |

Thank you for the replies.
I was considering multi-way horizontally and vertically with the same driver for a larger image size (potentially) and even less mechanical excursion for the bass. Don't need more power and no need to reduce dispersion. I'll have to try it; cardboard boxes are cheap.

Focal Aria 906s. If I have the Proprius at max and using a Majestic to control volume, then at 10 O'clock you're starting into ear damage territory, at 11 you're watching the flax bounce merrily on the Aria but have unknowingly gone into ear danger as there is no distortion such is the authority of the amplification.

Kef R7 Meta. 4 ohm load and sounding fantastic with the Proprius amps. Incidentally I’ve had my Majestic and Proprius combo up and running for a little over 10 years (bought in July 2015) and never really powered off. They must be playing music (radio is on more or less permanently in our house) at least 8 hours a day.
They sound as good today as 10 years ago. No recapping required. The only thing I’ve changed is an Enigma PSU on the Majestic (just do it!!). I’ve no desire to change anything, so this amp combo must be the best value for money HiFi I’ve ever bought. The R7’s are in quite a large space (by UK standards) at 42 sq meters, and with the neighbours out, they more than fill the space so don’t worry about the figures, they are just numbers. |
