Graham. If this is really so and asynchronous designs are completely superfluos, and I do believe you if you say so, then I'm grateful for the enlightenment.
All I can say on the subject is that my former DAC, which was not such a design, would suffer from progressively worsening jitter (up to a point where it almost sounded like a scratched CD!!) when direct streaming audio, while my current DAC which has the inbuilt clock does not suffer from any such problem. Still that could easily just be my old DAC being badly constructed, it was fairly cheap, or that my computer, the same I'm still using today, wasn't up to the task of direct streaming unasynchronously. Anyway I got that you didn't aim your comment at me but rather the industry so don't worry. ![]() Johan Edited by suede - 07 Nov 2012 at 5:56pm |

Johan, S/PDIF receivers such as the venerable Wolfson WM8804 also recover the clock from the source but have their own phase locked loop (PLL) controlled by a stable crystal clock to sync them with. The WM8804 is often used just to clean up jitter for other receivers.
Likewise an adaptive mode or non-asynchronous USB receiver recovers the clock from the source and has its own stable crystal generated clock. The jitter is just as good. To class all receivers as bad because they don't follow the pattern-part brigade (virtually all other manufacturers) is a total lie, but they are big and can get away with lies - often telling their customers everybody else is lying other than themselves - blatantly in their publicity. This breeds fear in the customer which is what they want to achieve. I should know, they've been trying to drag me down like that for 12 years now - sometimes using their magazine friends, but as the archers of old used to hold their two fingers up and proudly shout to the enemy "I've still got my bowing fingers" so shall I. |

Graham, do you ever put your gear to any of the mags to review, (I'm sure I've seen some 5* reviews somewhere), or are you totally disillusioned with them all? Some better than others? Ifor Edited by ICL1P - 07 Nov 2012 at 9:40pm |

When you consider the sort of user reviews you see on here there would have to be a special 6* category just for us...
However, we were often given 5* just like products which don't perform to our standards, and therefore the buyer isn't given honest information IMO. Yes, I am disillusioned by them all, and if an editor would like to talk to me direct and reassure me otherwise, then I'd willingly send them all we have. But, more often than not we're invited "to make up numbers" at short notice, so you know it's a private promotion for matey boy friend. |

I am imagining a World where magazines got most of their money from the manufacturers of the products they reviewed. But then they would... and... oh no, that would mean...! Phew, it was just a bad dream. |

Today I bought a new USB-cable to make a test, a cable from Supra. The improvement was remarkably. And the Supra cable was just half the price compared to the Audioquest Cinnamon I used prior to the Supra. |
