I know of two amps by respected manufacturers (and I'm not saying who) that are claimed to be class A or pure class A, but only do class A for the first 1/3rd to 1 watt!

So, if two manufacturers do this then how many more?

And is this legal?

If it is, then can I claim my new Proprius mono-blocks to be class A if I wind up the bias servo so the output stage conducts 200-250mA (instead of the common 10-50mA for class AB) which will make them do the first 1/3rd watt in class A?

I would have thought this a con to be quite honest, but if some of you think this sort of specmanship is kosher....?

Your views please.

It is a scam for the un-educated buyer. Sadly it has become the norm because we as buyers have allowed it!

Graham, thanks for asking! My opinion is that your reputation is based on being honest about your products and the hard work that goes into them. I share mrarroyo's feeling that we buyers have encouraged marketing on "Class A," "upsampling," and other jargon instead of the SQ.

Mind you that 200-250mA would need a sizeable heatsink which could double up as a bun warmer...
