Sorry, Graham! Looks, like I just forgot about the simplest (and already existing) solution! :)

il Dottore, Good points, first about the USB inputs, USB was originally designed to support keyboard and mouse communications, then printers/scanners, external storage, and finally media related devices. Any good engineer will tell you that continuing to modify a design that wasn’t originally intended to support a function results in a less than optimal solution. I’m coming to the conclusion that at least with an ADC, the best output for 24/192 is coax SPDIF. The DAC side has been less of a problem, but still for a stable 24/192 without messing about with special drivers etc., SPDIF provides the best technical capability into the audio playback world in my opinion, and as you stated, all DAC’s regardless of age work with SPDIF. Also, on the power supply front, my Konnekt 8 came with a wall wart type power supply. Until it failed I didn’t really pay any attention to it. I replaced it with a computer grade 12v linear power supply from my surplus collection. The improvement in the reduction of strange drop outs and general noise level was really noticeable and I’m still discovering the detail improvement in the playback. Graham, I thought government intervention and attempted suppression of the small entrepreneurial spirit was an American thing. Ten thousand pounds, each time, what do they do that costs that much each time, we are after all just talking about a power supply not some unknown entity requiring the invention of new technology to perform the tests. Your DAC concept sounds good. Jon, The Audiolab products are not currently distributed in the US according to the Audiolab web site, but Canada has a distributor, so I am planning to contact them to find a dealer. It seems a much better digital processor/hub than an AV receiver and I need a CD player anyway. Tom |

I used Kema Quality BV in the Netherlands as they were cheaper than Nemko in the UK. It did include testing to both IEC 60950 as well as CSA 60950 which are the same standard, but it involved the engineer talking to the Canadian Standards Association on the phone. The CSA also wanted £5K a year to let us use their approvals logo which is the only way we can sell legally through Canadian retailers... Edited by Graham Slee - 01 Jun 2012 at 4:05pm |

Zwazoo, the Audiolabs are well worth a listen but I would wait for Graham's DAC if you can.

Yes, my main interest initially is for a solid CD transport for use at work. I believe the 8200CD would provide the connections for a portable media player and computer while driving something like a pair of Proprius mono-block power amps, allowing me to reduce the foot print of that system while significantly increasing the sound quality. Hi Tom, quick answer and back to thread topic. The 8200CD is the best CD player I have used. It is front loading with a sturdy plastic tray. It plays all my pre-recorded disks including the 20 year old ones. Nowadays I use it as a DAC for my Squeezebox or iPOD dock on most days and for CD's weekly on average. When you demo one please try the different filter settings, I preferred Optimal Transient (RC: 'filter' then '5'). Jon

And perhaps preventing potential support nightmares for windows drivers I suppose. Will it be only balanced outputs? |
