My current amp, an Arcam FMJ A19, has its own headphone socket. But I've just upgraded my headphones to Grado SR 325e's and am thinking about investing in a headphone amp that may get more from them. I'm considering splashing out on a Solo Ultra Linear DE. Does this work best as a stand alone, with a direct connection to my turntable, or if I connect the Solo to the tape output of the Arcam will the sound be compromised noticeably? Any thoughts / experiences?

Hi Peter,
The Solo is designed to take a line level input. Assuming that you are using the Arcams inbuilt phono stage, then its preamp output should be used to feed the Solo.
If you are using a stand alone phono stage then it can feed the Solo direct, but unless you introduce a switch or keep swapping cables it can't feed both the the Arcam and Solo.

Just listen, if it sounds good to you, enjoy it.

Thanks, Ian. I use a Reflex M phono stage connected to the Arcam. I think you've answered my question, so if I wanted to only listen to headphones (and not speakers) I don't need the Arcam - I can connect the turntable to the Reflex M and that to the Solo.

Hi Peter,
That's correct. The Reflex M and Solo produce excellent results when used together, particularly when CuSat interconnects are used.
If you have a PSU1 it's possible to use it to power both the Reflex and Solo, have a word with John C to make you a suitable power lead.
I happen to use just such a setup with my Sennheiser HD600s a wonderful combination.

Happy Listening
Ian
