Following on from my "Piano Music" thread, now that the Big DAC is in the offing how about a few CD suggestions to really test it with? I say CDs because my current streaming option involves Homeplugs and an Apple TV. The digital out from my Cyrus CD player will connect directly to the Big DAC.

I would like to build up a small collection of testers that I can get to know really well before I get the Big DAC on loan.

Please be specific about which version, of maybe multiple CD releases, is the one to get.

I have this CD and I think it's amazing! (I love the vinyl record even more though!)

Hello Ifor

If it helps, here are some of the tracks that I use when setting up different equipment. From a variety of genres but varied enough to test the system. Album titles are in brackets:

Anouar Brahem - The Astounding Eyes Of Rita (also Album title)

The Civil Wars - Poison And Wine (Barton Hollow)

Royal Southern Brotherhood - Fire On The Mountain   (Album name also band name)

Booker T - Hey Ya  (Potato Hole)

Pinnick Gales Pridgen - Frightening (Self titled Album)

Chris Jones - Long After You’re Gone (FLAC download)

Unknown Japanese - One Man Lioun (FLAC download)

Nortec Collective - Nortena Del Sur & Ciruela Electrica (Tijuana Sound Machine)

Kodo Heartbeat Drummers - O-Daiko "Big Drum" (Heartbeat Drummers of Japan)

Ottmar Liebert - La Luna  & Caipira (La Semana)

Michael Jackson - The Lady In My Life & Billy Jean (Thriller ‘gold’ 25th anniversary edn)

Keb Mo - I Don’t Know & Slow Down (Slow Down)

I am not sure if I would be allowed to share any or all of these but happy to do so if you are interested to PM me and if it’s legal?? (I own all the originals & all are on CD or are FLACs which I could put on disk).

Otherwise, Anouar Brahem, The Civil Wars and Ottmar Liebert are all exceptionally well recorded and beautiful CD’s as are the two FLACs listed. Pinnick Gales Pridgen is Hard Rock, Royal Southern Brotherhood is Southern Rock & Booker T’s is a great recent album.

Nortec and Kodo are not to everyones liking but really test various aspects of the system. The dynamics on ‘Big Drum’ are stunning if the volume is adjusted to ‘normal’ listening levels at the start of the track

Ifor - could you burn some of your lossless files to CD? This way you'd be playing music you were already familiar with . . . (and your CDs would no doubt sound better than their commercial counterparts!)

Or, a couple of suggestions:

The second one, with desert bluesman Ali Farka Toure and kora player Toumani Diabate, has more leading edges than a century of test match centuries. Richly atmospheric and mostly contemplative it's improvised music making of the highest calibre. IMO this is a great test for how detail and micro-dynamics are resolved. But you soon stop listening to the audio and get swept up in the music . . .
