TT power supplies

Anyone here got any experience of using a separate power supply/speed controller with their turntable?

I looked at adding one to mine which has a 230vac synchronous motor. I tried a Project DS strobo but it didn't work at 45. There's a US product by Phoenix Engineering called the Falcon or even better the Eagle which people over there are using with a range of tables. The differences between it & the Pro-ject & their ilk were explained to me by one of the guys from Phoenix.

"The Falcon is very different from the MH Cruise Control or Pro-Ject Speedbox DS, which are both rated at 3W max. These devices use a very small (6VA) output transformer that has a high output impedance; when a load is put on the output, the voltage will sag, a lot. The Ingenium motor is rated higher than 3W and is most likely swamping the output of the Speedbox. The Falcon does not use an output transformer, its output amp is directly coupled to the output and has very low output impedance. The voltage does not sag when you connect a proper load to it".

Makes sense to me, but my electrical knowledge doesn't go much beyond wiring a plug.

Unfortunately import duty, shipping & handling fees probably make importing one prohibitively expensive anyway.

So..what do we have this side of the pond.. for not silly money?

Thanks for the link. I've had a chat with OL. Pretty sure their kit can be made to work & they reckon it will be a huge upgrade & at the price it needs to be. My main concern is that it will require mods to the existing motor pod (bang goes my 5year warranty) or some sort of home brewed effort, which I know I will hate.

Maybe I should live with it as is & just spend the money on more vinyl lol
