I believe there may be good news coming from The Moorlands.

Correct. Firstly I'd like to thank Graham for the time and effort he's obviously put in to try and resolve the problem I had. ![]() tg for the suggestion about a shoebox because he had a good idea where the buzz was coming from and Fatmangolf for his efforts and time with the "loaner" programme. Fatmangolf should know why I originally suspected the Elevator? I can categorically state that there's nothing wrong with it at all. The Reflex was never really a suspect. I tried the Cusat cables which Fatmangolf had sent but found that the buzz was then in the left AND right channels, whereas before left only! Changed back to Chord and it was still there in BOTH channels. ![]() I'd just about given up and was ready to send the Elevator to Graham to check when I had a slight brainwave, that doesn't happen much these days, and remembered that a successful trial was carried out in the early 1960s using granite as a substitute for porcelain to insulate high tension power lines from their carriers. Next stop the kitchen from where I acquired a 2cm thick x 40cm x 30cm granite chopping board. I dug out some rubber feet too. This I placed on top of the equipment rack with the Elevator, Reflex, Era Gold and Solo UL on it, rubber feet between granite and rack top. The Elevator at the far left where I had found, using the shoebox test, the buzz was the least audible. After connecting everything and power on I slowly increased the pre-amp vol. to maximum. Nothing, almost total silence except for a slight hiss from the speakers. So granite "rocks" in this instance.I've set up the Pink Triangle Tarantella/Nima/Denon DL304MC for listening. With the Elevator and Reflex both being switched on and off intermittently for the past couple of days there's been no proper "burn in". Now they've been on continuously overnight allowing a proper listen later today. I did try a couple of lps late last night. Paul Simon's, There Goes Rhymin' Simon and Tony Christie's, Now's The Time. Kodachrome on side 1 of PS's has a guitar on the left and last night it frankly sounded awful, very bright and non-descript. Out of curiosity I tried it again this morning and it now sounds like a guitar. So possibly just an overnight "burn" seems to have improved things. The first track on TC's has a really deep and strident bass line throughout which the Elev./Refl. handled superbly last night, might I say better than my own Era Gold? I'll listen through my speakers later, last night and this morning was with my Denon headphones. |

That is very good news Oldagetraveller and shows what trying a small change in setup can do. To have a "slight hiss" at maximum volume and gain of 10,000x is a fine testament to the high quality of the GSP and Naim gear you have there.
Better gear is cruel in exposing any issues in source material and setup. You're definitely not the first one of us to stumble upon a dramatic cure (like your cutting board, tg's shoe box) and then realise what the actual problem was after this. Trying some Polipods for other reasons (isolating the electronics from vibrations, discuss another time!) I cured a buzz/hum problem and learned that the rubber or silicone feet I hadn't put on weren't just there to prevent scratching the metal case underneath. Similarly I learned decades ago that high gain stages don't like transformers and concealed mains cables in walls...
Many experienced users on this forum have described the benefit of allowing extensive periods for high end kit like GSP, and this explained is in the equipment manuals I have. So I believe the Elevator will get better and better over the days ahead, please keep us posted on your listening pleasure. I must admit to a little jealousy here - if I hadn't got the MM3 I would have borrowed an MC just to try the Elevator/Reflex M myself.
By contrast I was the first "loaner" of the Reflex M so it has had at least 300 hours of burn-in but the Elevator was straight from the GSP QC testing. I can imagine it was a little "enthusiastic" when first powered up for the reasons stated in the previous paragraph.
Now lets get back to listening to music. Edited by Fatmangolf - 19 Nov 2011 at 8:22pm |

This is the point this side topic returned to the main topic and this link http://www.gspaudio-community.activeboards.net/uk-loan-programme_topic1211_post9692.html#9692 takes you back to the main UK Loan Programme topic where it left off.
This was a locked topic but members may wish to add to it as tg did on the end of the main topic, so I unlocked this topic and moved it here. Complicated? Think how I feel ![]() Edited by Graham Slee - 20 Nov 2011 at 9:05pm |

It is worth mentioning, that I would not have been able to make the suggestion that I did without the video showing the equipment placement. Perhaps it might be worth noting for anyone having similiar issues, that sometimes a picture can "tell a thousand words". Glad of a happy resolution at little outlay.
