On another but related subject (to Audiomods 6) can anyone with a Rega turntable tell me what the measurements a) and b) are in my sketch?  The context is that in specifying my PTP Lenco plinth I've ended up with the tonearm too far forward for ideal antiskate setting.  The only measurement i paid attention to was the 222mm pivot to spindle distance.  I can get round this issue by toeing the arm inward toward the platter so not a big problem for me, but i'm communicating with someone who is commissioning a plinth based on mine from the same carpenter.  I would like to help them both.

Hi Ifor

I make it a) exactly 200mm and b) = 82-83mm* on my RP6. Hope this helps.

f.

* Of course, anyone armed with the 222mm and 200mm lengths and the right angle will be able to work out precisely what b) is. My excuse is that I haven't analysed a triangle (other than the green ones in Quality Street boxes) since my Maths O-level in 1974... Embarrassed

Many thanks Frank.

I too remember all that stuff about the squaw sitting on hippopotamus hides, which tells me that if a) = 200 mm then b) must be 96.35 mm, which is rather more than your measurement.

It's easier to measure from the top and right edges of the baseboard to the pivot and spindle respectively, then work out the differences to get A and B. But tonearms vary as you found out.

A different approach is to check the clearance needed at the rear of the tonearm. That gives you a line parallel to the top edge of the baseboard. Then use a ruler to measure 222mm from the pivot to that line. X marks the spot.

Yes, that would be an easier way to measure. The fact that tonearms vary isn't particularly relevant, because all I'm trying to do is work out where Rega thinks the best place is to mount their 222 mm spindle to pivot arms.

Thanks Jon.

Yep, I did wonder about that measurement - turns out I misread my ruler and it should have been 92-93mm - though that still seems a bit short, doesn't it? Maybe best to go with Jon's alternative methodology - particularly as the diagrams are so natty!
