Elsewhere on our fourm Graham has explained the final tuning of the op amp loading above audio frequencies. My comments here are a first impression of a brand new piece of kit.
I like the refinement but it's a very small difference to my ears as Graham said. I'm hearing a little more of the surround effects on some eighties LP's e.g. out-of-phase and swirling delays on Robbie Robertson's solo album, panned instruments are clearly positioned as before so wider soundstage but just as precise positioning as before. I think the hi-hats and cymbals are slightly tighter, crisper without being sharper/more trebly if that makes sense. Complex mixes seem even clearer than the Reflex M, which I consder to be one of that preamp's many strengths. I think the refinement has improved the separation on the room ambience/echo on the tap dancing from the studio effects on Stanley Clarke's bass on Basically Taps. On Mozart's Harp and Flute concerto the lead instruments are clearly distinct from each other and they sound more life like than before. It's a much played (and cleaned!) record so I am impressed as always by the way the music is not interrupted by the clicks. This may be even better than with my Reflex M. First impression from playing a few LP's of an almost new unit: I really like it and will listen more as it burns in. ![]() |

Sorry, this may be obvious from the title but just to clarify, is this a brand new update to the Reflex? It seems this is the first I read of it is all.

I understand that it is an enhanced version out on trial/loan for feedback.

I don't think I made it clear - it is the production Reflex M. Half of the tweaks went in from June 1st 2012 after feedback from the Dublin 2012 High-End show, and the other half were included in production units from October 19th. The latter involved redistributing the output current budget. The Reflex M is now as optimized as it can get without a complete circuit rethink, either that or silicon valley comes up with a better audio op-amp which I don't expect to happen anytime ever. |

Is there a way to tell whether a unit has the enhancements by looking at the unit or the packaging -serial # or model # change? |

Good question. I bought mine around the end of December 2012. It could be older inventory, so the serial number would be the only way to know for sure. |
