It might seem heresay to admit to this, but occasionally, when ripping an LP I use a bit of equalisation in the wave editor to make the sound more "likeable". Whether fattening up the bass a little, or, in the case of a Steve Winwood album (Back in the High Life) toning down a treble that could strip wallpaper.

Of course if my pre-amp had tone controls, I'd not need to do this - but that's another thread entirely LOL .

You'll be talking about 'loudness' controls and 'rumble' filters next. I miss the 70's. The Linn Kolektor has tone controls, but they are so subtle, no doubt to maintain Linn's Hi-Fi philosophy, they actually make very little difference.

Smile

I used to use the loudness button on my old Hitachi amp quite a lot. All the "audiophile" gear in the world doesn't mitigate against less than perfect sources. I sometimes wonder if the quest for sound quality "perfection" has thrown the music-enjoyment-baby out with the bathwater.

Does anyone still use a graphic equalizer plumbed into the tape loop on their amp?? Used with restraint and an understanding of what you're doing these could be remarkably effective.

That was the example I had in mind. Tea towels over the tweeters.

A situation where cloth ears would come in handy . . . LOL

I cannot stand it any more. The Reflex C went back and I put the old phono stage back.

The surface noise returned and the bass faded. This will make me sound like some over-paid Hi-Fi magazine hack, but there was also a 'texture' missing.

It is my birthday next month and I have been authorised to purchase the ReflexBig smile
