A moth machine or a Okki Nokki might be better value.
I have a Moth machine and it does make difference to the charity shop fodder, it's also supposed to make a difference to new records removing the release agent but I can't say I noticed the difference. |

Hi Darren,
interesting post! I have a VPI 16.5 on order (website says normally delivered in 2-3 days). Customer service telephoned me (brownie points) to say they are waiting for supply and I should get the machine this week
I have decided to go the machine route, and I freely admit that I chose on price, as I now have several hundred LPs, 78s and 45s. A lot of them have come from charity shops, many are new and some are second hand sourced from dealers. A lot of them are obviously quite dirty and although I have been cleaning manually up till now, I do not feel the cleaning is adequate even after two or three cleans. I use L'Art du Son and lab grade distilled water for manual cleaning with the Clearaudio brush. I now have some Keith Monks liquids which I am going to try, expensive I know so we'll see! I'll let you know if the machine does not turn up this week, you may get another customer for the Moth! Regards Les |

Don'tknow much about record cleaning, never usually bothered, but there are probably a lot of LPs i don't listen to, but might if they were cleaned
How much does the Moth cost?
How many times can you use the fluid, or is it 1 LP only then new fluid?
Do you need to use any thing else such as antistat after washing?
Which machine do you use Darren?
Details appreciated,
Adrian.

Hi Adrian, it's one shot per side but the amount required is quite small. It shouldn't be necessary to use an antistat treatment after cleaning as you are just putting a layer of 'fuzz' back onto the record. Better to use a decent antistat brush before playing each side of a record. Michael Fremer warns to use the lightest of pressure on the brush as the record turns underneath it, otherwise there is the possibility of pushing any freshly acquired dust into the grooves of your just cleaned record! I also put all of my freshly cleaned records into a MOFI antistat sleeve. Regards Les |

I use "Durable" cleaning wipes, a soft cloth to wipe the surface after playing it with an old but not damaged stylus. It's very good at removing mold stains from 2nd hand records that have been stored in sheds etc... Wilko sell them cheap at £2 a box at the moment. I found the results as good as records cleaned on pro equipment, though i'm not sure if the wipes have any detrimental effect on the vinyl, i haven't noticed any problems.

My plug for the machine approach... I took 1/2 dozen disks to my local record store (Sound It Out in Stockton-on-Tees) where they used an Okki Nokki. I was quite surprised at the difference it made on a well looked after but much played LP. On the second hand LP it was more dramatic, less surface noise. In all cases the records looked new again.
It's an expensive option (approx £400) but very tempting.

I am now using an Okki Nokki and it makes a difference. There is a general impact on background crackle/surface noise, notably detail in quieter passages on LP's. On dirty records like second hand and charity shop records, it makes a big difference.
If you have 7 inch singles and used to have them in the open paper sleeves, the improvement from cleaning is very good. NB you would need to buy a different vacuum arm for 7 inch as the machine comes with the 12 inch fitting.
There are various videos on Youtube showing how machine owners do their record cleaning. And lots of information is available online about the various cleaning formulations people use, experiment but use common sense! I am using the Okki Nokki concentrate and purified water, which has worked well.
