I'm new here, so if this has been asked before, I apologise :-)

Is there much difference between a Solo powered by a plug top and the PSU1 supply? And will the Solo be noticeably better than the headphone output from my Cyrus 8 integrated amp?

I use Sennheiser HD650 (mainly) and Grado SR225 headphones.

Thanks

Hi, welcome.
There do exist some different types of Solo-headamps Confused, AFAIK:
- Solo's before 2004, totally different layout and exterior!
- Solo2004 Intro(linear wallwart) or MC(PSU1),
- Solo2007 Intro or MC,
- Solo Green with Switched Mode PS, also can be used with PSU1,
(though according to many listeners not much of a sounddifference there)
- Solo SRG(also SMPS?) which is very new, I don't know much about this one yet.

I myself do have an untweaked Solo 2004/PSU1 and I enjoy it a lot. Smile
When I went from wallwart later on to PSU1, IMO it was a very big improvement overall.
I did/do use a Sennheiser HD600.
IMO it's much better than the headphoneamp(burn-in for a week) on my Cyrus8vs. Big%20smile
The Cyrus8vs headamp is IMO better again than the one on my Marantz CD5001.

Personally I've never heard the other Solo disguises so can't help you there.
Just tried to answer your question, hope you have fun. Han

Belated thanks Han, your reply was interesting.

I've just bought a PSU1 for my Solo, admittedly half expecting to be disappointed if I couldn't tell the difference between that and the wall-wart (Intro) supply. And I have to say that I liked the headphone output from my Cyrus 8 amp more than the Solo/wall-wart combination.

I needn't have worried though - in my opinion there's a big difference with the PSU1. Music is now in detailed 3D: there's much better separation and definition of instruments and voices, and a sense of scale and positioning that wasn't there before. In a word, stunning

Dave

PS I've connected the Solo and my Cyrus CD8 player with a Gotham GAC1 interconnect - very happy with that too!

I would be interested to hear which model Solo you have WB.

Good to hear you are happy with the improvement.

It's a 2007 model - I bought it in October, second hand, off an eBay seller who bought it new in May this year. And I got the original receipt to prove it

Hi Dave, just to be sure about the model. Wink

So you did buy a Solo2007-Intro(with a green RoHS sticker on it), which came with a linear wallwart PS?
And now you've upgraded to the Solo2007-MC(RoHS) by adding a PSU1!
That's clear then and OK. Have fun Han
