Thanks Jon.
So, if you could only have one turntable, which would you choose, and why?
How do you compare the Rega exact with the goldring 1024?
Would you choose a different one for the SL1200 and the P3-24?
Thanks again.

I think the SL1210 mk 2. At up to £200 second hand it's under 1/3 of P3-24/RP3 and TT.

The Exact goes well with the Rega arm but ignore the third screw and go for Baerwald alignment. It probably wouldn't as work in the SL1210 and so I haven't tried this.

The Goldring 1042 is very good in either deck, a step up from the 1022 which shares its body. It's more versatile than the Rega Exact. My Music Maker III is great in both decks but it is sensitive to main hum so I grounded the P3-24's motor casing and took the SL1210 transformer out into a separate box. It is also 3x the price of Exact and 1042.

I liked the Goldring 2500 (different sound, more midrange than the 1042) but sold it on when I got the MM3. Graham and others are right about the sound of the 1042.

So in summary: second hand SL1200 or 1210 mark 2 with Goldring 1042, Achromat 1200 plus a Project Puck. IMO

Thanks Jon. So I need to keep looking for the elusive 1200/1210. Does it matter if mk2 or mk5?
Also Bawerwald will need a google search, as it sounds more like some ancient Viking who raped and pillaged the north east coast of England! Who needs Vikings these days when there are politicians.... :-)

Hi, mark 2 would be my recommendation. They pop up on the Internet and in second hand shops at £150-200+ depending on condition.
Have a look at the alignment articles on Vinyl Engine. Register and you can download various arc protractors for different decks/mounting distances. Baerwald published a geometry for arm alignment (overhang and offset) that minimises tracing distortion (the horizontal angle between stylus and groove) over the record playing surface. And it's one of the alignments that Loefgren previously published. Science bit over, print an arc protractor and follow the instructions. It's fiddly the first time but well worth the effort.

Check the spelling before you Google! It was Vikings as Normans who invaded England in the 11th Century. And I am pretty sure we haven't got any politicians raping and pillaging the North East coast of England. Unless you are thinking of spending cuts?

Thanks Jon. And with regard to the politicians I was referring to all the cuts over a number of years. What was a centre of manufacturing, not much left, with the exception of Graham of course!
Re the SL1200, second hand here they seem to vary from about 1/2 to the same price as a P3-24. I just need to find a local one, not the other side of Aus!

Not a problem Jon, I know there are some good deals to be had in UK. Interesting a lot of stuff here is much more expensive that just an exchange rate thing, and the equivalent of VAT here is only half what it is in the UK. Decibel hifi (Graham's Aus distributor) appears to be one of the few distributors that is not extracting to Michael on prices- kudos to Brian at Decibel HiFi in my eyes. I have been offered a good price on a P3-24 with TTPSU, but would prefer the technics if I can get one, everyone here says that is the way to go, and you are the tried and trusted experts. :-)
