It was a 7" square board under the Reflex M preamp which is sits on the hifi rack next to the amps. In the end I just popped some Polipods under it, but I suspect Blu-tac would do the same job.

I had my turntable on a large marble board on spikes then got a proper wall shelf for it which was much better. It's one with a metal frame and perspex shelf on spikes, plus I put Polipods under the SL1210's feet.

Which is why so many today are made of MDF. And the fact that any resonce it has is very u inform. Whereas good old fashioned wood is all over the place due to the varying grain structure and materials like stainless steel and granite also resonate at the wrong frequency.
Any thoughts/ advice? Again I appreciate go with what you like the sound of, but it is always worth trying to reduce the number of options to consider. :-)

Good points, I think it's about how the panel/shelf handles vibration from the record player and matching this and also how it responds to sound in the room from the loudspeakers or movement e.g. footsteps, plumbing noise, traffic rumble, etc. The marble rings if knocked but it more dense and so massive than a similar sized mdf shelf. I would avoid a steel plate.

Generally I assume the manufacturer's recommendation on shelf type is a good starting point. My P3-24 is on the Rega open shelf and sounds fine. I have tried putting a marble shelf in between but preferred it without. It's all about personal taste as you wrote earlier.

Thanks Jon. Are you a happy P3-24 user? Or do you have aspirations for bigger and better? Or do you feel what you have is more than good enough? Do you have it with the TTPSU? If not have you tried it for improvement? Any thoughts appreciated. And is this your first turntable or what you have ended up with after numerous iterations?

The P3-24 is good and is improved by the TT power supply. I have also changed the following:
  • Rewired arm internally with Litz wire and replaced the phono cables with a low capacitance RF coax
  • Replaced the sub-platter spindle with Isotek unit
  • Replaced the glass platter with Isotek 25mm acrylic
  • Changed the counter weight and arm stub to Michel Tecnoweight

I enjoyed doing these modifications and prefer the sound of this turntable with them. It is worth remembering that they would add 75% to the original cost so the combined spend would buy the next Rega up.

I have got a Rega Exact cartridge in the P3-24 at the moment. It had a Goldring 1022 with borrowed 1042 stylus at one point, that was very good. My Musicmaker III was great in the P3-24 before I got my SL1210 and fitted it there instead.

I have owned 5 (?) cheap budget turntables over the past 30 years. The P3-24 with or without modifications was much better than all of them, fast and rhythmic sound. I also have recently bought a second hand SL1210 mark 2 and modified that, the big change being the new tonearm Origin Live Zephyr. With the MM3 fitted that is my number one turntable but I still like my P3-24.

Bang for buck my second hand SL1210 mark 2 was very good. The standard arm is fine and it can be rewired internally and externally.

Quite happy to answer the questions, it's no trouble Frostg. I asked similar ones myself and people shared their experiences and advice with me.

My main tip is always check the turntable setup, starting with being on a stable level surface! Getting the cartridge alignment right makes a big difference to the sound.
