The reason I decided to part with the Proprius is because of all the problems that come with settting up and optimising speaker audio. Graham does this stuff for a living but I don't; I want to keep things simple whilst still being able to uphold Graham's reputation of excellence. I was curious and enthusiastic about a quick and easy route to HD540II performance from a speaker system but even with the Proprius, there is so much hassle involved in getting the flawless full-frequency sound that I imagine in my head.
I instead wish to focus on headphone optimisation. I use the CD as my digital source whenever possible, which is usually the best (most adequate) digital source as long as the mixing and mastering has been done properly. Now that I use very transparent headphone, amplification and interconnects, nailing the "full connectivity" digital to analogue conversion is my next focus. Bitzie is just USB input so I need Graham's Majestic. It's funny really because when he was developing it, I never took much notice yet now that I've actually thought about it, the Majestic may very well be the "holy grail" of digital audio. I'm trying to imagine the epicness of a fully burnt in Majestic, attached via short Lautus phono-phono, to a fully burnt in Solo ULDE attached to a fully burnt in HD540II. That kind of combination is going to be setting records for headphone audio, IMO. Edited by Ash - 24 Mar 2014 at 5:14pm |

Might it be an idea to wait until after the roadshow before making the final decision on disposal of the Proprii. The demonstration should reveal what can be achieved with a speaker set up.

The people may have gone quiet but their Graham Slee equipment is making fine sounds and running sweetly like mine is! |

Thanks Ian... The reality is that neither headphones nor speakers can truly capture the recording atmosphere, but you can get really close to it. Just because the speakers don't live-up to your headphone experiences doesn't mean the speakers are wrong. The BBC and others trusted the LS3/5A design for years to get the balance right on outside broadcasts and studio monitoring - often you'd see a recording desk being used to mix down a live program in the back of a van parked outside a venue - the engineer relying on the LS3/5As either side - no 1 metre spacing there, just lots of sculptured tiles stuck to the van walls. Having said that, they often EQ'd +3dB of bass on live rock but not necessarily because the LS3/5A lacked low bass - they tended to do it for the cheap transistor radios teenagers listened on (70s era). I'll probably not be able to give you really deep bass at the show - more likely 'flat' to around 75Hz, but I'll be concentrating on sound staging. I can use and will take the AB2 bass extenders but the price for bass is timing (the loss of it). In my experience you need low compliance (stiff) 18 inch drive units to obtain bass that can keep up with the music, but hi-fi goes for high compliance rubber roll surround units, and tries to force bass out of 8 inch or smaller cones using porting... the problem here is it results in the boost of only one frequency - hardly natural. |

Indeed Graham, audio reproduction in real world settings will almost always be a compromise. Headphones and speakers each have their own advantages and limitations. I prefer speakers as for me they give more feel to the sound in the lower registers, something even the best 'phones cannot achieve.
Realistic well timed deep/lower bass really does need large articulate drive units and a suitable listening space. |
