Soon after I bought my P3-24 in 2009 I switched to a 2 point attachment between headshell and cartridge, using a Baerwald alignment based on the IEC inner and outer grooves (about 60mm and 146mm). It has got a Rega Exact cartridge and various mods already so I was curious about the combination of 3 point and Baerwald.
With the Rega 3-point attachment the effective length (arm pivot to stylus) is about 237mm. I measured it as 236.5mm. On the standard mounting distance (pivot to platter spindle) of 222mm, the overhang of 15mm barely makes the Stevenson alignment so I knew I would have to reduce P2S. I have tried 2 options for P2S:
In both cases I was able to use the three screws supplied by Rega, which made the sound a bit tighter and punchier. The second option required a slightly larger offset angle but it sounded better on the records I played. The P3-24/Exact gives a quite different sound to my SL1210/II and Musicmaker cartridge. Less detailed but punchier. A nice change which works well on pop and rock. |

Interesting reading Jon, I assume you have the 3 point mount type arm rather than the older through spindle type which makes it rather more difficult to change the spindle to pivot distance. Do you use the TTPSU with this deck ? - my impression of adding that, was that it made quite a change in the overall presentation. |

Thanks Tony. It is an RB301 arm which has the three screw base and you are right about the old Rega fitting, where I would have drilled a new hole in the next corner round the plinth. Even so the three sets of screw holes involved a little work. I had to rotate the base for the 219mm option so the holes did not interfere with the original 222mm ones. The 213mm screw holes were far enough apart to have the base parallel to its old position. Extending the original 23mm hole towards the platter spindle has resulted in a cutout similar to the SME ones. Obviously I can't move the cartridge along the headshell as the front screw fixes the effective length, so the adjustment is the mounting distance i.e. moving the arm pivot towards (or away) from the spindle. You are right the TT PSU makes a difference. I bought mine a couple of months after the P3-24. I think it firmed up the sound and improved the pitching. My P3-24 has been modified in stages with a Rega white belt, an after market sub-platter and a heavy acrylic platter which the records sit on without a mat. And I have rewired the arm, earthed the spindle and the motor casing. I have replaced the thrust bearing on the motor. The latter reduced the hum on inner tracks to very low levels when I had the MM3 mounted on the RB301 arm. Edited by Fatmangolf - 02 Apr 2013 at 10:01pm |
