Last year I bought a handful of records at a moving sale. The guy I bought them from was clearly an “audiophile.” The records seemed chosen for the sound rather than the music, and the ones that I brought home are the best sounding records I now own. On their face there’s nothing special about them: not 180/220g, not boutique reissues, not from a particular label, factory, artist… anything. You wouldn’t necessarily stop for a closer look if you saw them in a box on the sidewalk.

So here’s my question: how did he find these marvels? From context and chatting with him a bit I really don’t think it was trial-and-error (though I could be wrong). But somehow this guy in his 20s knew which were the most beautiful recordings across all the main audiophile genres. Is there a list somewhere? If so I’d really like to see it!

Not to create suspense, I’ll post picture of the records from that haul once I’ve found them all.

I do know some do collect from a perticular label, pressing plant, recording studio or all three, they will look at the serial number on the record sleeve.
There are some specialised record collecting websites out there you could try, don't know any off hand.

Really you should only buy music you like, I don't think buying a record just because it's a good recording is doing your vinyl collection or your wallet any good and that record only become's wall art or a wast of space.

I agree with Jon on this. The records I bought because I was told they were audiophile, never get played no matter how "correct" they are, simply because I find them musically tiresome.
That none should be able to park up and enjoy the view without a smartphone and the knowledge in how to use apps

I too find that a great many audiophile records are musically boring and don't hold your attention once the initial "that sounds great" feeling has past. However "audiophile" reissues of great (musical) recordings are another matter - where extra care has been taken over mastering/cutting/pressing etc.

It can impress the mind but does it move the heart?
