Contrary to audiophile urban legends and unfounded rumors, Technics makes a great arm. With a high quality headshell it is also  more rigid at the business end than many "audiophile" type arms. Bearings are also very smooth and low friction.

Maybe you can post some measurement/analysis. What I'm hearing is some upper-midrange congestion. Now that's on low quality audio, but if I can hear it like that, it makes me cautious. I have no desire to start modifying a 1200GS.

You won't hear anything through a YouTube video other than YTs compression algorithm and the frequency response of the cartridge and/or anything else down the chain.

Re: mods, all my mods are reversible and take less than 5 minutes to install. Number one is a very rigid magnesium headshell. The other is a silicone damping well from KAB. I have some other things but those are key.

Headshell is easy. Does the silicone damping trough tend to pick up stray pet hair and junk? How often to you take it off and clean it up?

IME, no, but I don't have any pets. If you have pets, you can use your turntable with the dustcover down to mitigate that. If you're paranoid about pet hair getting on the turntable and in the damper, then you may want to skip the damper mod. The turntable does work fine without it.

My Sota has a motor/pulley, but the shaft attracts that downy cat fur, human hairs, and other assorted fluff. There is very little clearance, > 1/8", so getting in there and cutting the mass loose and removing it takes longer than you might think, and it degrades the motor performance. I'd probably not characterize myself as paranoid in this regard, but I appreciate your tone.

That sounds like a bit of a pain. Is the motor separate on this model or under the dust cover? Just curious.

What cartridge(s) do you plan on using? That might factor in whether the KAB damper is worth trying or not. However, it sounds like it might be better to skip it in your case.

Also curious, do you have some kind of air filter system to deal with the pet hair? FWIW I've never been much of a cat person. When I had dogs, they were mostly short haired dogs that wouldn't shed much. Vacuuming at least once a day usually took care of it.
