Here:
www.whiskyfun.com (you will have to scroll down a bit) I hope you enjoy it! (For vinyl lovers: while the CD version is mastered reasonably well, some are reporting that the heavyweight vinyl version is absolutely sublime) Edited by Lucabeer - 23 Apr 2009 at 5:56pm |

Update: it looks like the vinyl version is MUCH better...

"At the age of eighteen, Kevin Gray was the youngest mastering engineer in the country when he started cutting records at Artisan Sound Recorders in Hollywood. That was in 1972. Over the next five years, he cut hit after hit for artists as diverse as: America, Paul Anka, The Beach Boys, Debbie Boone, Donald Byrd, Mac Davis, ELO, The Grateful Dead, Freddie Hubbard, Billy Joel, L.T.D., Manassas, The Osmonds, Kenny Rankin, and Redbone." http://www.recordtech.com/atmweb/atmKev.htm (about that time I was playing some of these records to a dancing public...) This is what he has to say about vinyl... "The phonograph record is a marvelous medium for storing and reproducing sound. With frequency response from 7 Hz to 25kHz and over 75 dB dynamic range possible, it is capable of startling realism. Its ability to convey a sense of space, that is width and depth of sound stage, with a degree of openness and airiness, is unrivaled by anything but the most esoteric digital systems." http://www.recordtech.com/prodsounds.htm |

Posted on the Depeche Mode forum by "DjBR": "It's not that vinyl will always sound better than CD, on contrary, a proper mastered CD will kill off the vinyl version because it's clean, clickless and popless and there is no low level noise of the groove." *YAWN* Edited by Analog Kid - 26 Apr 2009 at 11:36pm |

Well, well, let's not be harsh on fellow DM fans!
Personally I'd take a WELL recorded CD over a well recorded vinyl any day. But the trick is that "well recorded": frankly, it's getting harder and harder to find them... |

I think you mean well-recorded music on a well-mastered CD. Yes, I am sure lots of people prefer CD over LP...just for the convenience. When it comes down to it that is the main selling point of CD for most people. Listening to LP records requires patience, effort and maintenance. Once you get carried away with the convenience and simplicity of CD, it is no wonder you prefer CD. Every time I ask people they always repeat the same arguments: CD is free of noise and has a wider dynamic range. Hmm...90 db of CD over 75 db from vinyl? You really need the extra 15 db? As for the noise, surface noise or tape noise never bothered me. I listen to the music, not to the noise. Even most recording engineers who secretly prefer analog, will say they prefer working with digital, simply because they get carried away with the infinite opportunities and the ease of use. Mastering engineers also love working with digital sources. Loading up a few wave files on a computer is so much easier and quicker than loading up an open-reel tape on a tape machine and then calibrating the machine for correct playback. But what about the sound? They always forget to talk about the sound. Since I don't care about convenience, for me the vinyl LP is the ultimate format. It just pleases my ears better. ![]() Edited by Analog Kid - 29 Apr 2009 at 9:55am |
