Can only agree. This house was built 18 years ago and the plasterboard used is not even half inch, partition walls are 3 inch which does little to stop noise transmission. At least it's detached which means I can turn up the volume assuming I seek and gain the usual permissions from SWMBO (who's usually watching tv in another room fortunately separated by the hall). Some years ago I worked in suspended ceiling design and layout and wall cladding can be effective but in a domestic situation is not recommended unless you're seeking the industrial look! The only effective solution as mentioned elsewhere here is an air gap which ideally should be as generous as the resulting reduced room size will permit.

Rockwool slabs between 600mm spaced "2x2" battens with a layer of 1/2 inch "Soundcheck" and a layer of 1/2 inch plain plasterboard (overlapped) is quite effective on masonry walls. For really difficult situations double up the battens going at right angles to the first lot, double-layer the rockwool, and apply 22mm T&G particle floorboard before the soundcheck and plain plaster board. Seal round edges using fire-stop acrylic sealant.
Any wall at right angles to the above will cause fringing so that's best covered with the basic depth of insulation too. Don't forget to lift the upstairs floorboards and pack the cavity adjecent the wall with rockwool too or the noise will travel to the upstairs wall and vibrate its way through that way. Same goes for wooden sub-floors. Also fill joist holes with fire-stop acrylic sealant. The above is basically the standard of class E building regs that new houses should be built too, but are often not. |

One observation from personal experience - beware of rear-ported speakes placed near to party walls (and facing away from them) since the bass goes backward through the wall, which will often transmit these frequancies easily.
Front-ported speakers send less bass backward and work better close to party walls. Ultimately the best solution is also the most expensive - go detached, or better still buy your own private island. |

I agree with this. Also getting some good insulation between speakers and any points of contact to further minimise structure-borne noise. In this respect I suppose those string-attached speakers Graham use are quite ideal. Edited by suede - 04 Oct 2014 at 3:12pm |

I thought he said he did in another thread? Or maybe I've got it wrong
![]() Edit: Sorry I definitely got it wrong. I somehow got the notion Graham would be displaying his new phono stage at an upcoming audio show using these speakers along with a Proprius pair but that was someone other than Graham, as more observant followers of the forum will already know. ![]() Edited by suede - 04 Oct 2014 at 8:12pm |
