John C made me a balanced 1.5m TRS to XLR pair for my Majestic and it inputs to the balanced analogue XLR sockets on my DEQX processor. Digital music sounds really stunning and considerably better than anything I have heard before so maybe I am just lucky? (I have no idea if this is called R-3 though) |

I understand. ![]() You never short an unused phase on an output as it can often overload it. A 600 Ohm output uses a 300 Ohm series resistor and is loaded by a 300 Ohm input resistance the other end. It is capable of driving 600 Ohms, but may not be able to drive 300 Ohms. It is often the convention to short an unused input, especially if making a "universal cable". |

Wait, what? This is what I wanted to start with; a balanced 1.5m Lautus. Two means of EMI suppression. You sure it's balanced?? The Lautus-R3 is the name GSP gave to a Lautus interconnect between Majestic and Proprius. Not sure what the R3 suffix denotes? Thought all the Lautus cables are single-ended as standard.

Definitely Balanced Ash - the outer diameter is slightly smaller than Lautus or Cusat so only John could confirm what it actually is. Does the trick beautifully though - the Majestic too often sounding better than vinyl (grrr)
No ferrites though so it can't be called Lautus Edited by Drewan77 - 12 Jan 2015 at 8:42pm |

Was just about to say that it's probably a balanced CuSat50 if the diameter is reduced (and no ferrites placed). Easy mistake to make on first glance as they use the same braid design. Funny how the "often sounds better than vinyl, grrrr" comment fell on post 666...
That's the future of digital audio though; to be brought up to vinyl fidelity. Don't understand why so many listeners focus on the frequency response and noise floor of digital audio when it's the phase response that's the main problem........... There's some really dynamically-flat digital audio out there too although that's just poor mastering, I think, not that the medium isn't able to accommodate the dynamic range.Edited by Ash - 12 Jan 2015 at 9:00pm |

The R-3 is an unbalanced cable and I think the Majestic to Proprius connection it gives is just slightly better IMO than the excellent balanced jack to XLR lead Andrew has. It's really close as the GSP DAC/Amp combination is what makes things work so well, I think the R-3 cable simplifies the connection as Graham explained earlier.
The balanced operation of Andrew's cable is a different way of reducing interference to the ferrites on the unbalanced Lautus cable. My R-3 is only 0.6m so I asked John Cadman to make me a Cusat50 version without the Lautus RFI suppression. It replaced my DIY version of an R-3, which worked as proof of concept but was surpassed by the GSP R-3. |
