Hi all,

I've recently got a used Solo SRG Mk I which I love. My two sources are laptop into an SMSL M400 DAC and a Rega RP3 turntable.

I have a pair of Grado SR 125e already but am looking for a 2nd pair of headphones. Ideally closed back to cut background noise. The pairs I have demo'd are listed below, however this was through a Naim Unity Atom, which I imagine will have a very different sound signature.

Focal Celestee (my fav out of the 3)
Focal Elegia
B&W Px8 (far too bass heavy)

Are there any closed back headphones you all recommend to pair with the Solo?

Many thanks,

Chris

The srg will get the best out of whatever you have.

Not the best maybe but I picked up some Sennheiser HD380 Pros on eBay that I'm very happy with.  Very similar to HD600s in tonal balance, quality build, and very good sound for very little outlay.

I'm not familiar with high-end closed-back headphones. I'd look into the Sennheiser HD820 if I needed a sealed design.

First I agree with Bags - the Solo will get the best out of whatever headphones you choose.

I have a Solo SRG II and just today received closed-back headphones to replace the pair Beyerdynamic DT 770 (80ohm) I have used for the past number of years.  I looked at options over a period of time, including the first two on your list, the Beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro and others but in the end I went for Beyerdynamic DT 700 Pro X.  Unfortunately I was not able to try any before buying.

After an evening of listening to the DT 700 Pro X I’m happy with the purchase and they are an improved listening experience over the DT 770. A bigger difference that I expected.  Very comfortable and good passive noise isolation.  They are easier to drive - the Solo does not have to be turned up past 9 o’clock.  The Solo is a great headphone amp and surely would benefit much more high-end headphones.

Neither are current models but I have used Sennheiser hd250 linear II and HD280 closed back headphones with Solo amps. Very good on musical character and clarity. I'd third Bags' comment!

It's quite terrible how insanely expensive really high-end headphones have become, even closed-backs. Glad I kept my Proprius because DIY Mark Audio speakers are so much better value for money and you can really experiment and adapt the set up for listening preferences. Big panel speakers would fill a room with sound but have limited postioning in small rooms and again can really cost a lot. I think I will stay settled on good dynamic drivers in cardboard boxes on my desk, just for the value-for-money aspect. I firmly believe that fantastic quality engineering and sound should be priced at an accessible level.
