I was thinking more about the tendency of a current to produce a magnetic field - reading about cable designs it seems that the magnetic flux is a major concern since it resists changes in current and can in theory effect the sound. I think this is inductance, isn't it? Edited by RobW - 13 Jan 2010 at 4:43am |

I'm not qualified to give the absolute answer.
Yes, a straight wire with current produces a magnetic field that can produce back emf to restrict changes to the current but inductance from my memory had a factor related to the 'number of coils'. A straight wire has zero coils hence zero Henrys. All of the inductance is where the coils are, namely in the dynamic driver unit. I've never counted them but I'd guess about 500 or more. The twists of a cable are negligible to this, however the counteracting positions of either a twisted pair, double helix or kimber quad plat (?) would reduce this effect though. I do not think the cable material would effect back emf though unless it changed the resistance. I bow to those with letters after there name (or amp designers!!) Sceptre |

A straight piece of PCB track has zero coils but some inductance... ![]() So, maybe a wire has too? Don't worry though, any inductance would be so small as not to affect headphone performance, but when we get to ultra high frequency radio signals, that's where it matters. So as far as this topic is concerned Sceptre's observations are AOK!
