I wonder how many of us, given a big lottery win, would move to a house with a dedicated music room free of domestic compromises?

I'd have a new house built so that the main sitting room worked for the HiFi, so doing away with the need for a separate listening room.

Ah, yes. But how would you cope with competing demands for the telly, and er, "requests" to turn that bloody music down? (The majority of my music is not liked by other members of the household Cry ).

(Sorry - getting off topic here . . Embarrassed )
I couldn't compete adequately, but even if I had the separate room I would be wrong because I wouldn't be being sociable. Cry

All being noted.
Looks like 1.5m 3.5m and 7.5m so far...
Oh, and most likely another reel of cable and sleeving Graham Wink

Hi John

Have you looked (listened) yet at the sonic effects on longer runs? i.e. is there likely to be any difference in the sound between say the 1.5m and 7.5m lengths (or in my case, even longer)?

I'd better answer that. A longer run of cable becomes progressively more capacitive so may alter the phase margin with some amps (not the Proprius I may add).

However, the dielectric (separating insulator and jacket) remains the same no matter what length. The dielectric constant decides the memory effect of the cable. No memory would be the "holy grail". Also its capacitance stability versus voltage effects differences in quality between lows and highs. Suffice it to say this cable has low memory and high capacitance-v-voltage stability, and these are unaffected by length.

I fall into the unequal length cable category, my speakers being either side of the patio doors. I've always kept the two speaker leads the same length as a matter of habit. Perhaps I'll try unequal length just to see if there's a noticeable difference.
Regarding the stereo image, at the recent HiFi show at Whittlebury, Ken Ishiwata was demonstrating the Boston Acoustics standmount speakers (with mid price amp and CD, 11th commandment noted!). He explained that to overcome the harsh room acoustics and comparatively large listening area of 20 people in 4 rows of 5 seats; the speakers were toed in at about 45 degrees, crossing well in front of the most forward listeners. The effect was quite remarkable, a very stable stereo image with good width and height. No other tricks were apparent apart from the speaker stands being placed on a couple of unadorned paving slabs!
A great example of getting the best from everyday affordable equipment.

This sounds very interesting. A pair of 5m cables would be ideal and it is the length that (unnamed) hi-fi shops lend out.

FWIW I have used unequal lengths of speaker cable on various occasions and still get a good stereo image with clear central image and front to back depth. Generally a metre or two difference, rather than 10m vs 3m.

What about in multi channel arrangements - I have always been anal and had the centre speaker the exact same lenght as my front L&R - and the rears the same length as each other.

My cousin always just uses whatever is left / the cheapest way of hooking his centre up - i.e. buy 6 metres - 2.5m to L&R and 1 to the centre

Obviously my systems always sounds better than his Wink - however I wondered what the effect would be?
To me the processor / receiver delay is based on a distance from the speaker to your ears not including the cable?
