Hi everybody.
new member here - so this is my first post. im thinking about buying a new turntable. i currently have a pro-ject debut 3. next week im going up north to check out a Rega rp6 with the exact pick-up. i am a proud owner of a pair of sennheiser hd650 and a gs solo ultra linear headphone amp. i was wondering if anybody has any experience with this combo(rp6 + hd650 + gs solo amp)? my music taste is mostly rock, indie, folk. are there any other turntabels i should consider at this price range(ca 1000£)? second hand is not really an option... im going to upgrade my preamp which is a pro-ject phono-box some time soon. a graham slee preamp is of course what im going to buy. but for now im going for a new turntable. any hints and pointers are greatly appriciated.´:) |

Welcome Mads from Denmark!
I use 650s with my Solo ULDE (though with Sony and Technics turntables from the 80s). They're a great pairing. I can't really comment on the Rega, but I'd expect it to be better than the Pro-ject Debut. Will you be able to listen to the Rega when you go to see it? Any GSP phono amp will be an improvement on the phono-box. There's a European loan programme run by this forum which you might like to take advantage of when you're thinking of buying a new phono amp. There's nothing like a home trial to see what the kit sounds like in your system . . .

Greetings Mads
I can recommend the RP6, having upgraded from a Debut III in 2012. My musical tastes appear very similar to yours (+ Blues) Although the Pro-Ject is a very good performer, the Rega is more musical with great timing and pitch stability. It also produces lower surface noise/rumble, handles static much better and allows a wider range of quality cartridges (the Exact didn't suit my tastes when auditioning but is nevertheless a great partner). Overall the RP6 sounds more 'sophisticated'. Used with both an older Era Gold V and now a Reflex-M phono stage, I can see no reason to upgrade further. When funds allow, I suggest you audition the Reflex via the loan scheme as the RP6 really does deserve this and it takes performance to a whole new level (I also use HD650's but only with a digital front end, in a different setup) Good luck & enjoy ! |

Hi Mads,
Another turntable to consider in addition to the Rega is the SRM Arezzo.
The standard version is around £900 ex arm & cart. You'll need to be quite fond
of clear acrylic but I think it looks superb!
SRM decks aren't commonly known but are a bit of a dark horse IMO.
I've owned the 'Kinetic' version for a while & find it excellent - very solid & stable
sounding with excellent dynamics & soundstaging.
It's partnered with a Reflex M, SRM RB301 & Musicmaker.
Good luck!

In addition to the comments by Rich, I've had dealings with Stuart Michell who runs SRM over the purchase of isolation platforms for my turntables, one custom sized, and found him to be very helpful and friendly.
The Arezzo does get good reviews, and if I'm not mistaken the base model is upgradeable to the better specified models down the line . . .

That's right Bob.
The basic Arezzo can be upgraded in stages - to the 'Kinetic' flywheel drive version &
to the 'Ultra' with bigger PSU & isolation platform. I believe there is also a thicker platter
upgrade.
One disadvantage of the kinetic drive is the fiddle to change speed from 33 to 45.
If you only play 33s as I do this doesn't matter!
