I've finally settled my new system to a Cyrus CD8se2 and some sort of tri arbour stand, more for looks and to match the furniture than for performance...
Which gives me two question, as this set up is only going to be for headphones via my Solo (currently Grado 325e and GH1's). Firstly, The nature of the open tri arbour stand means I may have to place the Solo directly on top of the CD player, as it sits on the top shelf. Would that be an issue in relation to either component? If it is I'd have to custom request a solid top to sit it on and the price would rocket as if have to spec it new rather than pick up one of the many used ones. Secondly, the consensus is the Cyrus psx power unit helps. But this is usually with people who play the CDs to drive speakers via an amp. Would the power unit matter if the cd was feeding just the Solo? I'm thinking it has to as the quality of the feed is what matters, not what it is feeding into. |

As I wrote the second question I wondered why I was asking. I guess I just wondered if linear power was more important feeding the amplifier stage than the source...
It's academic now as I am getting the Psx anyway. The difference in a bespoke stand with a sold top for the solo, and a used tri arbour copy, is nearly £400... So my first question about amp placement is the key issue! Beyond aesthetics! |

I don't think it will make any difference.
I have a DAC and 12v battery on top of my CD player, and I can hear no difference with or without the equipment on top of it. |

I can't see there being any issue with putting the Solo on top of the CDP other than the headphone cable dangling in the way of the loading slot of the CDP.
Placing the CDP on top of the Solo would solve that issue. |

Thanks.
I was speculating the CD player may interfere with the amp somehow if too close. More by electricity than physically... Grado cables are renown for being bulky, though. And this thread is a poor attempt by me to procrastinate on a £450 bespoke stand that I know I want but don't want to spend! I want the solid top but could manage an open stand if I can take the solo perching on top of the cd... blocking the slot... ;-) |
