Hello John,
Forgive me for not answering your email but I'm here and reading. I think you've gotten yourself an older Solo? The "green" Solo? Correct me if my memory is wrong. tg and many others availed themselves of my "green" Solo offer when I wasn't sure how those new fangled switched mode power supplies would be accepted. That must have been nearly six years ago - how time flies. As yours has the red LED then maybe it's one of those? To be honest I couldn't be sure - I just get on with the daily design and business grind and let my two colleagues, John C and Leo, sort out the rest. They're great friends as well as salt of the earth engineers - a real blessing. Whatever you have of ours, the early stuff was made by me, then mid 2004 on, me and John C, and over the last 5 years, by John C and Leo. John C and me are ex-broadcast engineering and Leo ex-Carlsboro Sound. |

Tony
You revive old memories of battery operated radios. As a youngster I trapped rabbits and sold the carcasses and skins to save up enough money for a portable radio kit, Aegis I think. My pride and joy although, using valves, it was rather hungry on batteries. Even at that tender age I was modifying, trying out different components to improve reception. The Aussie publication "Radio & Hobbies" kept the fevour alive. That mag tried incorporating TV for a decade or so but has long since expired. So the obsession now is on DIY cables, mixing and matching components (with varying degrees of success), ..... Looking forward to the SOLO. John

Thanks for the reply Graham.
The SOLO will be posted to me tomorrow (Australia Day holiday here today) so I'll examine it closely when it arrives, possibly later this week, and get back to you with any details. So, if it is as you suspect it cannot be upgraded because it is pre mid 2004? Or maybe does not need it? Regardless I'll put it through its paces. Just because something is 10 years old does not follow it is no good. The used Headroom Blockhead balanced head amp in the primary system is superb, although sounded distressingly crappy at first turn on. That was because it was dead cold. After a few hours warm up it transformed so is now left on 24/7. It only uses 14W so I'm not worried about destroying the ecosystem. I'll do the same with the SOLO as it not only avoids ON/OFF stresses but will ensure it is always ready to deliver its best. Over the last few years I've frequented many forums (and still moderate the MUSIC board on Audio Asylum) but must compliment everyone on what a pleasant place this is. ![]() John

If it's that old it will have the luxury of Starget capacitors. Totally illegal to use them in products in Europe now.

All Graham's kit works best being left powered up. As you say it has minimal effect on the global ecosystem .I agree with you about this being a pleasant forum. I've dipped my toes in several over the years and left most after getting annoyed at either the way the forum was run, or the tone of the posts. The great thing here, for a technical numpty like myself, is that you can learn a lot from Graham's posts, and somehow knowing the design philosophy behind the kit adds to the total experience. I'm sure you'll enjoy your time with the Solo!
