When I was trying to make sense of the "floating shield" topology for line level interconnects, the main reason I could see was a lower capacitance than if the shield was grounded at one or both ends. Starting with RF coax at 50-60pF/m would have done the same albeit in a chunkier package. And with a screen round the signal conductor.
