Some people from West Yorkshire have a dim view of Barnsley for some strange reason - but that's Yorkshire folk for you. By the time I discovered that Graham Slee hailed from south Yorkshire it was already too late: I had purchased my very first phono-stage - a Gram Amp 2 Special Edition - bought from the famous Cartridge Man, Len Gregory, in sunny Croydon.
And do you know - as a Bradford man myself, I can honestly say the sound improved once I knew there was a Yorkshire connection. It was like the War of the Roses was fought and won and the sound that emanated from the speakers was there to prove it. Since then I have upgraded to the "Reflex" and have been very happy with its subtle qualities and ability to pull deep things out of the bag. But the truth is I have never really known anything else when it comes to phono stages...I am a Slee man through and through. How could I be anything else? Northerners stick together like superglued fingers. Now I have decided to join the forum after all this time because...wait for it, I am going the MOVING COIL way. I hope I haven't upset anybody! No, I'm not a traitor, though if Len Gregory knew I'm sure he'd have something rather explosive to say to me... Yes, as the autumn of my life is nearly over, I think it's time for an Elevator and a shot at the low output brigade. Wish me luck - I think I'll need it!

Welcome to the forum, Martin.
It's been about 3 months since I purchased my first low output MC and the Elevator to partner the Reflex and I too felt I was being disloyal . But I'm getting great results with the Zyx R100 and Ortofon Vivo Red carts I decided on. Both sound great and the Vivo is tremendous VFM (IMO of course!). There's no doubt that the Reflex/Exp combo produces stunning sound. And if you want help in choosing a cart you only have to ask. (You already know my choices )

Hi Bob,
Thanks for your welcoming words - it's great to hear about somebody who has taken the same plunge, so to speak. I was also thinking about Ortofon - probably the Rondo Red. It's about my price bracket and Mr Slee seems to like the brand. I also would consider Denon (I have a DL-110 high output cart at the moment which punches above its weight with some recordings). I see you are from down Surrey way. I used to live in Addlestone and my all-time favourite record shop is Ben's in Guildford. I'll be heading there at Christmas. What about you? Now I live in Brazil, would you believe, where I am a member of a forum that has a good few Slee fans. Trouble is, it's all written in Portuguese so I sometimes struggle to know what they're going on about! Suffice to say GSP products are very highly thought of over here ![]() Now I am on the forum, I'll be updating my experiences here in sunny Porto Alegre. I could say I'm only here for the World Cup, but that wouldn't be quite true. And I can't say I'm here for the beer because, as a Yorkshireman, they don't know what beer is over here. They think it's something yellow! ![]() |

Thanks for joining us Martin. I live in a town that was at the very top of North Yorkshire so I chuckled at your "Yorkshire folk" comments.
Like Bob I have taken the heretical leap to MC. To be fair I enjoyed a lot of LP's and singles through the excellent Music Maker III moving iron cartridge so going to MC was about trying something new. I borrowed the Reflex C and started with the Denon DL-103 MC cart, thanks to Phildent. I have "nuded" it by taking off the plastic cover. I decided to take the MC plunge like you two and bought an Elevator EXP, which is a terrific piece of kit. I can't recommend the EXP highly enough to anyone with a LOMC cartridge. It offers a variety of loading options and boosts the music level without adding anything. Bob tipped me off about the Zyx R100 and I am very grateful he did. I am really enjoying its clarity and the cartridge with Graham's EXP and M is bringing many records back to life. All three are pretty tolerant of surface noise, crackle, even scratches. Thanks again and please keep telling us about the sunshine, it will keep us going through the Yorkshire winter.

.It's good to hear there are GSP fans in Brazil, too. I see you live in the southern part of Brazil. I'm just off to São Paulo - well, kind of - watching qualifying for Formula 1 - probably the closest I'll get to going there myself .... Enjoy your trip to the MC darkside ....
