Until a month ago I wasn’t aware of headphone amps. I decided it was time to buy a set of nice but not too expensive cans. Sadly in my current house there is not enough room for the main hifi speakers (B&W CDM 7 SE). Music: Marillion - Holidays in This is a pretty bright recording in itself and can sound flat very quickly. It can bring out the mid-bass shyness and harshness in the AKG. Pink Floyd – Delicate sound of thunder. There is a lot going on beneath the surface of this recording. I also have seen PinK Floyd live twice and a very good set of Roger Waters life.
Result: I bought the Graham Slee Solo. Blast! I was very, very satisfied with the K701, marantz CD 52 mkII SE, NAD C370 combo. But there was also some brightness, harshness at volume and occasional flatness in busy passages. Strange, since deep bass was present when called for. Then I sampled Graham Slee Solo/PSUI and was sold. Same control, no warm blanket coloration but also a lot more fine detail in the highs and good bass control. Even at high volumes. There is air around instruments. I can hear fingers plucking bass guitars. You can follow every instrument more effortlessly. I also find myself tip-tapping more with the Solo v.s. NAD or Canamp. Jumping and doing moonwalks in my living room while MJ’s Thriller is on. This must mean something I'm now degraded to a drooling bafoon listening to obscure pressings of my favourite CD's hearing all kinds of things never encountered before. Excellent stuff |

Sounds like you made a good choice.
I have yet to find anywhere with a headphone amp to try, let alone a selection. Don't know if this is a UK problem or is a problem everywhere. So instead of buying unheard I think I am going to try and go to (or organise!) a mini meet. |

It was rather difficult to track down a shop with headphone ams here in the Netherlands as well. I found 1 that specializes in Head-Fi. They had a range of heafphone amps and a comprehensive selection of headphones. AudioXperience.
Try asking the good folks on Head-Fi.com for a shop near you in the UK. Or perhaps a mini meet indeed.
The best thing is to listen for yourself with your own headphones. I must say that the combination of good headphones + headphone amp has opened up a whole new world sonicly.

Yesterday I was hanging out with the boys. Our wednesday night mens-night. No work, no wifes, no children, just the guys I grew up with. Watching movies, discussing music and generally being nerds. Needles to say we dont appreciate the wifes calling us for whatever reason, so they have learned not to.
How is this in any way relevant to the Graham Slee Solo, you say? Wait! read on.
As described above I have been very satisfied with the sound quality of the AKG K701 and Solo combo. I even got the wife to listen to it for a while to uhhmm try and cover my arse. You see it's not exactly a cheap or easy to explain hobby :)
(yes dear I really need this here shiney box so the gargantuan earwarmers sound better) And she really liked it, has been listening to a whole cd every once in a while. I'm off the hook wahaha!
Last week I sent the Solo Graham for the Ultra Linear upgrade. Now I temporarly listen out of the headphone out of the CD player and there is an empty space where the Solo was.
Last night, while discussing what would be faster around the nurburgring (GT-R or R8 V10) and the plot of ironman 2 and other world problems, my mobile rings. It's the wife....the house should be on fire.
me: "Yes?"
wife: "where is the headphone amp?"
me: "WHAT?..... uhmm........ it's of to Graham to um mumble mumble, it will be back though"
wife: "oh good....because it sounds like crap out of the CD player, I liked the sound out of the head amp much beter!"
As good a review as any

That my friend is brilliant! However you may soon need two of each or there may be arguments in the houshold.
