Technical question from a non-technical person.
What, if any, improvements could one expect from having older equipment such as CD players/ Amplifiers/ Power supplies etc serviced by the manufacturers? I'm thinking of 10 - 15 year old hi fi equipment that appears to be working well, but may have degraded over time without being noticeable ( or not as the case may be! ). It appears to be an expensive option, making new purchase seem better value! I'm aware this may be subjective, but hope you can see where I am coming from ![]() Regards, Adrian. |

Power amp capacitors can deteriorate- internal switches can become noisy and valves probably need servicing.
Not sure how much there is to service beyond that other than by manufacturers. Sure Graham will be pleased to check over and MY amp and CD player manufacturer will check over buy perhaps mass market fat Eastern stuff more difficult? There are specialist repairers out that who in some cases specialise in specific brands or gear. I have sent my second hand gear back for check over to make sure up to spec as you don't know the history. |

I've had equipment (not GSP!) serviced & upgraded in the past by a specialist repairer & it made
a considerable improvement. |

Me too. A couple of years ago I had my 13 year old pre-amplifier, power ampliier and a power supply serviced/upgraded by a brand specialist. This included a new volume control to the pre-amp (fluctuating volume). The audible difference was unbelievable, even on first switching on! More recently I had a much older NAD3020 integrated amp re-capped, serviced and tested by a specialist the vast improvement there was even more pronounced. I wonder if Graham advises his equipment is sent to GSP for checking/servicing and at what age? ![]() |
