I use VPI's shims. Solid metal, aluminum I think. About $15 each, if memory serves.

I thought I might post an update, just in case anyone is interested.
I bought a Funk Achromat 3mm (cf. 5mm, because the ebay shop stated that 3mm is the better option for acrylic platters). It certainly cured the VTA problem and sounded fine, though it's slightly warped. I used the included six adhesive pads to bond it to the platter but there remained a very slight rise which introduced a warp with records which aren't themselves warped. I let it be for a while and enjoyed the music (couldn't hear the effect of the warp) then became slightly irritated and wrote to Funk. I didn't necessarily want to send the mat back but asked how to get hold of more of the adhesive pads. Arthur K. responded and promised to send me some. That was over a week ago. In the meantime I spotted in one pic of the Wyndsor that the VTA appeared to be lower than mine was at its lowest position. That prompted me to disassemble the entire arm mounting mechanism. To cut a long story short, I needed to do a small amount of careful filing of an elongated hole in the arm mounting sleeve as it was roughly cut and a pin was catching within. After re-assembly (about three attempts to get it exactly right) and it's fixed! VTA adjustment now goes low enough for me to use the bare platter and have the arm parallel to the record surface, which I have reverted to (took ages to carefully remove the residue from the Funk's adhesive pads). Incidentally, I'd also contacted Creek and Mike Creek himself responded to say he'd try to find something to use as a shim beneath the bearing. Nothing came of that and I'm glad it didn't really, otherwise I may not have been prompted to take apart the mounting assembly. Cheers Edited by jrhughes - 23 Aug 2010 at 10:26pm |

Glad to hear you finally resolved the issue Jason, thanks for posting that. BTW I do not use adhesive spots with my Funk mat, but I do use either a weight or a clamp. I could well imagine getting the irrits with a warped surface. |
