Hello everyone here on GSP forum.
I own a "standard" Rega P3/RB300 with Elys2 cartridge.
It's virtually mounted on a bookshelf to "planet Earth" through a big open construction with bookshelfs firmly attached to a robust concrete wall.
I have considered upgrading my TT setup since, well a year or so.

I almost did buy an OriginLive Aurora mk2(no arm), got some doubts about the buy...
...specially in knowing the upgradability and costs and myself.
Although I am certain it "as is" will be/would have been a big stepup the TT ladder.

2 months ago I went looking for some alternatives.
OK a cartridge seems obvious(though Elys2 is very good in P3), but...what about......
P3-24? RB300 mods? Groovetracer subplatter/bearing? other mainplatter? plattermat?
I am a strong believer in synergy and costeffectiveness and I also think that RG did the best he could in way of synergy and cost with the P3.

So I ended up with a 230VAC motordrive regenerator from HEED, the Orbit2 mk2 for E300.
Had to be careful (as always) by getting the right phase/neutral connections together with selecting the best sounding freebee kettlelead in my setup. Wink

It has a very good result in more openess (without big change of soundbalance), clearer and better depths, easier heights and in the total soundpicture less veil. Big%20smile
I am happy with it and wanted you to share that.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS  LOL for all and have fun. Han

Hi Cyreg!

I am a longtime P3 user and I have recently done a couple of upgrades from my standard RB300/Sumiko BPS which I have been using for ages.
Firstly, I would say that a cartridge such as the BPS was a big upgrade from the Elys - more detail, sweeter top-end etc.
My current set-up was arrived at in a fairly accidental way, i.e, unplanned. I am trying to build my own TT using Rega bearing/sub-platter with a granite plinth/platter driven by a DC motor via belt/thread drive. With this in mind I picked up a secondhand Michell TechnoArm A on eBay with the intention of using it on the 'special'. Unfortunately the project has stalled and my impatience led me to consider changing the RB300 for the TechnoArm on the P3. I was also very interested in a new cartridge as the BPS was pretty long in the tooth. I bought a ZYX R-50 Bloom low output MC as I had been seeing great reports on the web.
As soon as the ZYX arrived I decided to do the P3 upgrade. It was not without its problems! When I first attempted the tonearm swap, I could see no way use the VTA adjuster (which I was looking forward to playing with). I called Michell and they said that it would need to be removed and replaced with standard RB300 parts (bah!). Then as I was fixing the TechnoArm to the Rega plinth, one of the cartridge tags fell off onto the floor - I was very p****d off! Another call to Michell confirmed that they were willing to repair it If I mailed the arm to them.
So, just over a week later the TechnoArm arrived back in perfect conditioned and I tried again. After about 2 hours, mounting the arm and new cartridge, checking alignment and tracking force, I was ready to go. I was not dissapointed in the least. The sound was a leap above what I had before with bags of detail and lovely 'plummy'-controlled bass. I have been working my way through my collection with new-found enthusiasm. The Zyx is a great replacement for the BPS and seems to lessen surface noise far more  than the Sumiko.
One thing that needs to be taken into consideration though is the cost of the arm/cartridge combination, and whether the P3 as a platform is worthy of such components. I am thinking along the lines of a Gyrodec if my project does not materialise, so I do have the perfect partners if I go down this route.
Recently I have also been thinking about TT platter mats and record clamps to try to maximise what the P3 has to offer. I have just ordered a Clearaudio Harmo-nicer to replace the standard felt mat and also a TTweight from a guy in Canada ( 1lb weight machined from Aircraft alloy) which looks nice and was pretty cheap(£29 inc postage).
At the moment tho' I am really pleased with my vinyl front-end, but I find it incredibly difficult to stop fiddling!
The way I'm going I will have spent enough money to have bought a new SME!

Han,

good to hear you are happy with the upgrade, you may have started down an unfortunate path here though Wink - don't know if I really wanted to hear about motor upgrades - that is the one area I have not addressed Ermm

Rushun,

I have a P2 plinth and bearing housing and motor, with Tecnoarm A (I recessed the VTA adjuster into the plinth using a scribing chisel and much patience), Groovetracer sub-platter and acrylic platter, SRM Tech "silent base" and bearing and motor damping rings, a Funk Achromat and either a Michell clamp or a machined aluminium puck.

Cartridge is Denon DL-301 II, at first through Denon AU-300 LC step-up transformer but latterly an Elevator Exp into a Reflex phono pre.

The combination of the Denon cartridge and GSP phono stages are also good at minimising surface noise.

Each of these upgrades has been a lift in performance, perhaps the total cost might have bought equivalent performance if spent on a more upmarket TT in the first place - but I did not have that much then (or now) and that would not have provided half the thrills of the step by step process.

I have heard good things of the ZYX cartridges and am contemplating either the Denon DL-S1 or the ZYX R100-02 as a next upgrade when finances allow.

The upgrade where I was most unsure of the cost-benefit ratio (in advance, not in hindsight) was replacing the very good but relatively inexpensive Denon SUT with the much dearer Exp - I need not have worried - the improvement was immediate and profound.

Good to hear you are enjoying the results of your adventurousness.

Good vinyl replay is worth the fiddling around, check my post elsewhere on the Mint LP protractor for setup, I also find the Canrong stylus pressure guage to be easy to use and good value for money.

You have some great gear there and a lot of pleasure from the experience. The experience of tweaking and making incremental changes is fun, I agree, and I agree you are also right about the build of costs compared to a new TT.

Replacing the Rega sub-platter with an ISOsub GT had slightly more impact on the sound than fitting the Tecnoweight IMO. Both worth doing.

There are predrawn arc protractors for Rega TT's on vinyl engine, plus a utility to draw them for various P2S distances and alignments. Cheap and this makes a huge difference if you are currently using the Rega 3 point mounting.

One of the best changes was rebuilding the 640P with new capacitors and ICs. And I am looking forward to building a Genera kit and listening.

I have since added the ISOplatter - the 25mm thick acrylic one. It sounds much better to me than the stock version of glass plus felt mat. I think the records sound clearer, notably with midrange and high frequencies. The bass seems a little deeper but it is also tighter.

Upgrades are not cheap but you can hear the impact of what you do. At least with the platter change it is quickly reversed for comparisons.

I forgot to state the obvious upgrade for any hifi turntable is an isolation platform or proper wall shelf, giving a solid and level surface for the turntable to sit on. On a Rega this will make a big difference. If using an isolation platform don't put it on a cabinet or surface that shakes when music is playing.

Has anyone else considered or done an internal rewire on a Rega arm?
