Hi Ifor
I have not heard the product you mention. It appears to focus on the lower frequencies where much of the room damage happens, rather than the full range. I would imagine the potential improvements can also be substantial (but maybe not good enough for someone as fussy as me or as Ash seems to be). I don't see crossover or frequency timing options either, which have a pretty big impact on the final result. Likewise I am using almost no equalisation (very subtle at 3 frequencies below 80hz) but this product seems to major on equalisation and in my opinion the less manipulation of the original material the better
Older than I once was, younger than I'll be

The LS3/5A are intended for near field use. Sit close to them in a five or six foot equilateral triangle and the sound of the room will be less noticeable, provided you sit away from the rear and side walls. The low frequencies in a mini-monitor will need some boundary reinforcement and favourable room dimensions. The longest diagonals will set the lowest frequencies and the peaks/dips you'd hear, assuming the driver (i.e. the woofer) can deliver it from the cabinet.

Physically correcting room acoustics is quite challenging, it generally takes a lot more than sticking up some foam panels. Evening out the room modes (frequencies emphasised by the room dimensions) can be challenging and not fixed by four inches of Rockwool. Plus most of us will be listening to our music in lounge or other living space, and chatting in a fully treated room is strange!

Anyway I haven't heard the product described above. My past scepticism about electrically fixing acoustic/time domain problems has been tempered by using Audyssey on AV amps. It does a really good job of evening out the bass and improving clarity of the mid and high frequencies.

Ash, there is a difference between the kit you bought and the LS3/5A V2 I have, to quote Doug Stirling...

"PLEASE NOTE: The baffles you see on e-bay are NOT our LS3/5a V2........We do not sell our LS3/5a V2 as a KIT......Our V2 has a much better quality bass/mid drive unit (it's a custom SEAS made to our spec for V2)......

The e-bay items are far east sourced bass/mid units that we closely pair-match & then assemble to form a cheap / quick repair solution for all classic type LS3/5a's.  Classic LS3/5'a's from 1976 - to 1997 used the "everything mounted to the baffles" format."

That none should be able to park up and enjoy the view without a smartphone and the knowledge in how to use apps

Hi Graham, yes, when I bought those kits, I was aware that the woofers, tweeters and crossovers were different to the V2 retail version but I figured that the performance wouldn't be far off the V2 as LS3/5A is a performance specification. The woofers were described as Monacor drivers and I think they said the tweeters were "Scanspeak"??

My LS3/5A are, by no means, poor performers. From the Proprius, they are very good but like all small speaker units, there are limitations to their bass capabilities. I'm a very fussy listener when it comes to transducers being very faithful to the original recording. My LS3/5As do not do your Proprius full justice as such a small speaker won't provide full-frequency reproduction.

Whilst I'm happy to sell my LS3/5A, I will be keeping your Proprius as testing apparatus in my search for full-frequency reproduction from speakers. These amps are all a music lover like myself needs to pair with some worthy monitors.

For now, I have a Solo ULDE and HD540II, which is good enough for me. Smile

Hi Ash,

I too have a small room and spent a long time looking for suitable speakers. I eventually came across the Linn Majik 109's that have front ports and can be bi or tri wired and biamped. I have them bi-wired and they give very good bass and treble (they are 3-way) for such small stand-mounters.
I have them on Dynaudio 3 stands on solid granite blocks and that made a huge difference to the soundstage. Well worth considering for a small space.

Best wishes

I will add that my LS3/5A perform noticably better under my new bunk bed than they did when I just had a normal bed in the room. The bunk adds irregularity to the small room and is just the kind of dispersion "clutter" that I needed to bring down upper bass accentuation.

Everything is a compromise and you are suffering more than most with headphones being the only sane way of listening to music. Until you make that move to your own pad where the compromises are more 'manageable' and your LS3/5As will be given a chance to sing..................but you'll probably end up with floorstanders as the bass won't do it for you LOL
