To improve the sound quality from my ipod, I recently purchased the portable Voyager. I now would like to buy a new pair of headphones to compliment the Voyager and would welcome your recommendations.
For travelling I use a pair of in-ear, Ultimate Ears Super.fi5, which are very good, but now would be interested in adding pair to use at home as well, so the portability of the headphones is not such an issue.
I currently use a pair of BOSE Triport. I bought these about a year ago, primarily on the strength of their advertising, but never felt they delivered the sound quality they promised on the box and this as now been vindicated since I added the Voyager and hence the reason why I am now in the market to replace them.
I don't really want to spend more than £80, but if there was a really sound reason (pardon the pun) to extend the budget I would consider adding up to another £50.

On the move, I've got the ipod running lossless into the Voyager then using Sennheiser in-ear cx500. Sound is great and they're about £70. Well worth a look.
You should really get a good dock connector - 3.5mm jack lead as an upgrade from the GSP supplied 3.5mm-3.5mm lead if you're still using that. We're working on one now...

Thanks Darren, but as I mentioned I already have a pair of in-ear headphones for use on the move.
What I'm looking for is for a more conventional pair of headphones for use at home. For example I've heard Grado are worth considering, but as you can rarely demo headphones before you buy, I wanted to get some first hand recommendations.

I have the Grado SR325i but use them rarely. No problem with sound but they are v uncomfortable in comparison to the likes of Sennheiser or Audio Technica. Can't vouch for the cheaper Grados but they look to be similarly constructed so if comfort is a priority, perhaps best avoided. They do win awards but, as you'll have seen elsewhere on this forum, the "buying" of awards is something to consider if you're buying on recommendation in the mags. Hope you get some more helpful feedback!

Unsure of UK prices, but at around your budget (based on prices here) the ATH-A900 or the ATH-EW9 could be very good.
I have used the ATH-W1000 with the Voyager with very good results. Both of these are closed headphones and have received very good reports from those using them with other amps - they are very friendly to drive (more so than Grados). I believe Graham was quite impressed with the sound of the ATH-A900 - the EW9 are cheaper but look like a $million - woodies - yum  |

Thanks Darren. Yes comfort is very important so thanks for the warning about Grado's. Also agree about recommendations via printed media hence why I am anxious to get views via personal experience.

I tried the EW9 very briefly when the AT rep called. Look fantastic but you can't see that when they're on your ears! Wasn't "wowed" by the sound particularly but they were brand new and I only had them on a couple of minutes. Like how they fit on your ears though and would definitely give them the benefit of another listen before I diss'd them too much. |
