I might suggest that the ability to refute a proposed hypothesis explaining the mechanisms of an observed phenomenon, does not of or in itself, negate the validity of the observation or the existence of the phenomenon.

The aforementioned phenomenon of combustion was widely observed and used for a very long period before the currently acceptable hypothesis as to its mechanisms was formulated.

Tony - I had to re-read your post a number of times (Embarrassed) but I think you're saying that just because we don't know why something happens doesn't mean it isn't happening.

The problem with audio phenomena is that when differences can't be objectively measured, it's down to an individual to articulate their perceived impressions, which is when many subjective factors (like expectations) come into play.

Which applies to cables, cable directionality, burn in etc. I think Tony is saying scepticism is fine, but don't dismiss it out of hand. It might just be genuine.
