I recently saw a video with an interview with the microphone constructor/builder Didrik de Geer. We are here talking about microphones used in studios when recording music. (If you want to buy one, be aware - they cost about 20 000 Euro) Didrik de Geer is very much old school. He think the CD and digital is rubbish. He also said he really just enjoy recordings from the late 50-ties and the sixties until 1967. After that point no or very few really good recordings are available. What really caught my interest however was that he only listen to mono recordings. He use a one-speaker system with a mono turntable and mono amplifier. His argument is that everything got to complicated with stereo and some unique qualities got lost with stereo. Inspired by this I have now and then been down-mixing my music in foobar to mono, and in many cases i actually prefer the mono sound. Especially when listening in headphones.
Anybody who has any thoughts about this? The video mentioned above is in Swedish, so few of you will understand it, but the pictures shot in his workshop are fun and there is an interesting detail in the video. Look what kind of headphones he uses. http://www.tv4play.se/program/nyheterna?video_id=2255861 Edited by Humboldt - 10 Sep 2013 at 11:03pm |

Perhaps he meant that in his view the invention of the stereo cartridge/record took away something of virtue that he saw in the mono technology and that he thought the vinyl medium better suited to the simpler mono playback. Myself I've never even heard a mono cartridge so I can't say anything to it.
