First off hello everyone as you can tell this is my first post on these forums

I am thinking of getting a pair of inline attenuators as some of my cds sound overly loud and harsh, I never get past the 10pm mark on my Graham slee solo/psu1.

I have read some reviews online that say a use of inline attenuators can not only allow you to listen to music at a higher volume without any of the hardness or harshness but they also improve sound quality and detail.

However I have also read a review that states these inline attenuators also reduce sound quality and effect things like the treble.

My kit is as follows, I am not sure of the specs you need to know in enable to work out if I need any inline attenuators so if I do not give the right information it can be found on the manufacturers website’s very easily.

Graham slee solo/psu1

Grado gs1000 headphones

Sennheiser 650 headphones with a upgraded Stefan Audio art Equinox cable

Arcam fmj cd36 cd player with a Russ Andrews Signature Powerkord

This is all plugged into a Isotek Sigma with upgraded cables.

The rca's used to connect the cd player to the headphone amp are Chord Chorus

The arcam cd players Output level (0db) is 2.2Vrms

The Output Impedance is 50 - I am sorry I don't have the icon for that on my keyboard.

If you need any other specs I can get them for you.

I was looking either at the Rothwell inline attenuators or the more expensive Russ Andrews ones which you can actually specify what spec you need.

Which brings me onto my next question say I will benefit from a pair of inline attenuators then what attenuation level do I require they range from -11db up to -22db.

Sorry for my rather long question and dodgy English [I am very tired] and thank you for any help in advance.

P.S Music on this setup is just simply mind numbing, I find myself constantly saying just one more track until I realised I have listened to three albums and will only get a few hours of sleep tonight.

Thank you for all the time and love you put into your products, I am disabled and cannot leave the house, however with this setup I can at least travel to the live performances in my mind.

We supply and use the Rothwell attenuators on a regular basis.  Our Melody amplifiers feature stepped volume controls and it's exactly as Adrian Rothwell describes in his ads - either too quiet or too loud.  Means you can take volume up from 10 o'clock to 12ish so accessing more of the dynamic range of the amp.

In use (with other amps too), I can't hear any difference (detrimental or otherwise) in the sound.  However, when used between a pre and power amp (i.e. plugged into the back of the power amp), they definitely improve things.  It's all about lowering the noise floor but there are others on this form more qualified to comment on that side of things.

Not tried the Russ Andrews ones.  10db of the Rothwells works fine.

I've never used them with the Solo - has anyone here?
