Ok, this came about because I approached Graham with a crazy idea about
adding the Voyager contour circuit in a switchable mode to the stock (non- green) Solo. I won't go into great detail here about the Solo and the Voyager as they are highly acclaimed and get the coverage they deserve anyway. I found I was using the Solo for classical, rock and jazz but preferred the Voyager with contour ON for electronica due to the huge punchy bass and the way the contour just lifts certain frequencies and makes for a more aggressive but still balanced sound. Graham agreed to do the mod and after he completed the design and number crunching, the actual work was carried out by lead techie, John Cadman - both were an absolute joy to deal with. Graham decided to use the three position Source switch on the front of the Solo to switch the contour circuit on/off. How does the Solo with Voyager contour sound? Just as you would expect it to and probably much, much better. It sounds quite simply amazing. The implementation is slightly different than the Voyager contour as it's tuned for the Solo but imagine the best aspects of the Solo together with the best of the Voyager contour and you can imagine the sound. Truly jaw-dropping Graham agreed to do the mod as a one-off but was understandably reticent about offering this as part of the Slee product line. Do not expect to see the Graham Slee Solo 'SlamBass' model appearing anytime soon. Not that Graham didn't give some real thought to offering this as a mod or a kit. The main reason was that he is currently finishing work on a impedance cancelling network for the stock Solo which will use the space that would be required for the contour mod. (Hope that makes sense). Now before you think I'm mentioning this just so I can say ' I got it, you can't have it', there's actually something much, much better in the pipeline ![]() One VERY interesting thing that came from this is that Graham is now working on a very high quality tone control which would be a STAND ALONE unit encompassing three tone controls. As you would expect from Graham Slee, the unit will be in fitting with the range, made from high quality components, and tuned for an eternity before it sees the light of day ![]() After talking with Graham today, it seems he has been testing the unit and thanks to some recent in-house innovation, it no longer requires it's own power supply! One possibility is that the component will have a three position switch similar to that on the Solo. The switch would have three settings: 1. Pass through 2. Voyager-type contour 3. Engage tone controls I don't think we need to get into the debate about EQ or tone controls here. There are the die-hard purists and those that are happy to use EQ - it's useful for different room acoustics and for the myriad of different 'phones available. Even though Graham has a working unit, he still needs input from interested parties, so if this is your thing then please voice your opinion here or better still contact "GSP Audio" direct. For the record: I am not on the payroll, I have not received any discount previously nor will I receive one in the future for writing this. I will be first in line for the Graham Slee Tone Control and I will pay full price whilst grinning from ear to ear. |

Oh my goodness, yes. I'm a musician, not a purist, and I love a little extra bottom end in my system. I'd be very interested in tone or boost controls that didn't sacrifice the quality of the headphone amp. I'm still burning in my new Solo, but the lack of bass is what i notice most when switching to the headphones, simply because i added a Rel sub into my speaker system a while back to get just the sound i was after. Keep me posted on either a kit mod, or a tone unit!

I think it's a great idea. Coming from Graham I'm sure anyone wouldn't have to worry about it sacificing the sound. I prefer my music to sound just how it was intended, but there are plenty variations added into that equation, and I would love to have something like this to offset those times.

Those that need and want to use a tone control should find this little gadget of great use. I know many who wish their amps had such a feature. Enjoy your new toy.

As I've previously stated in Voyager reviews, I'm very partial to a bit of contour (on selected pieces of music) so this sounds great!
Fantastic work guys! |

Hi Josh
I've tried to replicate the contour with parametric EQ but could never
quite get that same sound. The Solo with contour sounds sublime :)
Looking forward to hearing some more info on this once the Novo gets
rolling out of the door!
Cheers
Mike
