I've had my Solo Ultra Linear (Diamond edition) for
just over a week now. It replaces a Musical Fidelity X-Can v3 and X-PSU v3 that
had some modification and a valve change to get a sound improvement, however
when I went to have a listen to some Sennheiser HD700 headphones I took my
original HD600 and MF amp for comparison. I also had a listen to the Solo Ultra
Linear through the HD600 and HD700. I came away from the audition with a new
headphone amp and HD700 headphones. Compared to the MF X-Can v3 using the HD600 the
Solo Ultra Linear doesn't have the background noise of the valve MF amp. The
upper and mid frequencies are nice, clean and crisp giving more detail than the
MF amp and opening up the sound so backing singers and instruments are more noticeable
or just noticeable as the MF amp didn't make their presence known. There is
also an improvement in the lower frequencies with slightly more bass extension
and tightness giving bass notes more definition. From what I've read on the forum the Solo Ultra
Linear still has some 'running in' to do, I'm looking forward to the
improvements. In my opinion the Solo Ultra Linear compared to the MF X-Can v3
is a very worthwhile improvement. It all gets even better with the HD700 headphones. For completeness I use my Solo Ultra Linear
connected to the record loop of a MF X-150 amp with a Sonos ZP90 streamer and
Rega DAC as source. |

Congratulations on your upgrades, Gary! I'm sure the UL/HD700 combo sounds fantastic
.Depending on your use the Solo UL will possibly take another week or so to really come on song. It'd be good to know your thoughts on the 600 v 700 as this seems like a logical upgrade path. I use HD650s and from what I've read the HD800 is a more appropriate route from these if you want to keep the same type of presentation. But hearing of real world experiences with the 700s would be good . . .
