These have caught my attention...

and yes, I do realize that the bass driver uses an enclosure.

Ash,
A friend of mine has these, driven by not expensive Arcam equipment in a 3m x 4m room. They sound crystal clear and image like all get out. Indeed, I've spent many listening sessions in the sweet spot, absolutely enthraled. In a very hi-if kind of way. Bags of detail and things I'd not heard clearly on familiar albums. However, when not in the sweet spot (which is much narrower than cone'n'dome speakers) the balance is quite unusual. If you don't need to share they could be great. They're far from the last word in bass coherence which, coming from headphones, might be an issue.
Mick.

ML does bass with a separate cone and all the predictable integration problems of slow drivers and quick panels. Quad does bass with a larger panel area. ML looks svelte, Quad looks like a barn door. ML doesn't have a point source delay line, leading to a more diffuse image. Except in the vintage '57, Quad does, leading to a big, enveloping, but more focussed image.

They appeal to different audiences. For my money the advantages of the single panel and the point source win out and as I've mentioned before, once hooked on ESLs it's hard to go back since they make even excellent box speakers sound boomy and coloured. The Quads are the end of the hi-fi road for me, and it's a happy place.

Thanks for your thoughts. The grass isn't always greener... and sometimes preference has to come into it too. I have never been utterly overwhelmed by the transparency of any pair of cone speakers that I've listened to... Maybe Proprius into electrostatics is the only way forward for me? Although not now; not enough space.

I have two friends with ESL speakers (57's) that they've lavished loving restorations on and they LOVE them. They have a real relationship with them that is remarkable. I must admit that after a listening session with them it takes me a while to readjust to my system, with a tinge of, "hmm...what if?"
