(my dj setup)
My turntables are running through my Rane TTM 54 mixer I turn my gain all the way up to the safest spot so it doesn't clip I turn the master out all the way up and on my sound card I turn the input up to the safest spot right before that clips. So my question is, is there a sweet spot on the levels to were the sound quality would sound better. Am I doing the right thing now, or would it be better to turn the master out on my mixer down a little bit, and turn up the input on my sound card? Edited by garygillespie - 01 May 2012 at 12:50am |

Gary, IIRC you are using an M-audio as your input ADC, I would not be using the input control on that to control levels in. I would do all the level setting in the analogue domain prior to the ADC input. Aim for around -18dBFS average signal on the M-audio control panel level meter with the sliders set to 0. Not being familiar with the circuit of your mixer I am not sure whether it is better to leave the master full up and control levels with the preamp gain, but it most probably is, this should leave your preamp stage doing the least work/signal distortion. I suggest that you read, absorb and apply the information in the following article - http://www.massivemastering.com/blog/index_files/Proper_Audio_Recording_Levels.php he is not referring specifically to LP transfer, but the principles are the same. Another reference with some handy extra info http://dbzeebee.blogspot.com.au/2009/10/digital-recording-levels-rule-of-thumb.html Edited by tg - 01 May 2012 at 7:32am |

Hi Tony, good advice as always and thanks for the links. The burnt steak metaphor is spot on.

Yes - very interesting links!
To give myself "adjusting-space" on the gain settings for my M-Audio ADC I use Rothwell Attenuators to cut the output from the phono amp by 10dB. But I have to admit I do record "too hot", though not clipping. I'd never considered the performance of the ADC working close to 0dB . . . Hmm.

I put attenuators into the cables. It keeps the peaks down at -6bB or lower. Now I think I was clever...

Browsing the Audacity Wiki I came across the following link http://minorshill.co.uk/pc2/meters.html some rather interesting looking standalone software level meters that might be handy for initial level setting prior to commiting to recording. From reading his descriptions they seem to have been engineered with serious intent to provide accuracy rather than being just a pretty gimmick. Most are freeware, though the one I liked the look of (naturally) is not. Will probably give them a try at some later time. Edited by tg - 01 May 2012 at 7:27pm |

Thanks for those links
I'll recording around -18dBFS and see if it sounds different.
